Person Charged After Sending Death Threat to Game Developer ARIKA – News

Perpetrator had sent threat message in September 2019


Video game developer ARIKA revealed on October 25 that a person had sent a threat message to harm the company and kill an executive staff member through the web contact form on September 3, 2019. Arika had reported the incident on the same day and filed a criminal complaint on November 15, 2019, while cooperating with the investigation. The police identified the perpetrator in early October 2020 and confirmed the charges on April 13, 2021. The perpetrator pleaded guilty to the public prosecutor’s office and was subequently indicted on September 9, 2021. There was a summary order on September 16, and the perpetrator was found guilty on October 5.

The police had asked ARIKA to refrain from disclosing any information until October 25, 2021 for the sake of the investigation.

ARIKA’s latest fighting game was Fighting Ex Layer, which launched on the PlayStation 4 in 68 countries and regions beginning in June 2018. The game received an arcade and Steam version in November 2018. The game also got a Nintendo Switch release titled Fighting EX Layer: Another Dash on April 1 in Japan and on May 20 in North America.

The game was the newest installment in ARIKA’s EX series, which previously included the Street Fighter EX games. Playable characters in that game include Kairi, Shirase/Hokuto, Garuda, Skullo Mania, Darun Mister, Allen Snider, Doctrine Dark, Blair, Cracker Jack, Shadow Geist, Sanane, and Hayate.

ARIKA developed Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99, and Super Mario Bros. 35 for the Switch.
