In the first six Paranormal Activity movies, the supernatural being at hand was Tobi, a demon who wanted a human vessel to spread his influence on the Earth, which felt a bit personal and selfish. Come Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, though, it’s a lot more biblical, as the haunting presence has more of an apocalyptic vibe to it, wanting to reign down hellfire and brimstone. With that in mind, let’s dive into what the seventh film offers through its malevolent force: the demonic prince Asmodeus.
What Is the Prophecy in Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin?
Asmodeus cuts a figure similar to Tobi, stalking young Margot as she brings her documentary team to an Amish commune where she wants to reconnect with her family. As they explore the forest, they sneak into a forbidden German church with paintings inside that clearly have an occult link to them.
There, the inquisitive read about Asmodeus as one of the royals from hell, seeing that if sacrifices aren’t made to him, he’ll bring blight, pestilence and death to the land. There are images of this, with communities attacking each other and burning the place down. These prophecies showing true chaos leaves Margot’s team petrified.
What Does Asmodeus Do in Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin?
It takes a while for Asmodeus’ role to emerge, as the commune’s run by the sinister Beliers, who are trying to use Margot for a ritual. Her mom, Sarah, fled and gave her up, but while Margot tries to learn more about her, she has no clue she’s being preyed upon. Asmodeus then starts haunting Margot in the attic above her room, where she realizes Sarah was kept, finding letters and drawings that paint the family as a dangerous cult.
Asmodeus ends up pitching her to the roof and leaving a lot of blood there. It seems like it was trying to kill the girl, which has the Beliers expediting the ritual. At this point, Chris and Dale head into town where they search online to learn Asmodeus once wrecked a Norwegian town. The myth states the community struck a deal with a witch, placing the demon in a woman, which would have to be repeated over the years. As they rush back, Chris learns Jacob and co. are now trying to transfer the demon from Sarah into Margot.
Does Asmodeus Win in Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin?
Seeing as Asmodeus is kept inside Sarah, chained below the church and rotting away, her hold over the entity wanes. This allows bits of its essence to seep out and stalk Margot, wanting to murder the girl so it can’t be trapped again.
Eventually, as Chris and Dale break Margot out, Asmodeus (in Sarah’s body) escapes the cave and murders Dale. It then fights Margot but gets butchered in a wood-chipper, hinting that Margot’s won. However, with the ritual never finished, the hellish gateway open and no vessel in sight, Margot and co. find the commune mutilating each other. As they raze the compound, it confirms the demon is now free and roaming, just as he planned all along.
