In Moon Knight #4, one of Marc Spector’s oldest allies from the West Coast Avengers returns to his life, causing him to unmask in more ways than one.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight #4, available now from Marvel.
Marc Spector’s recent return as Moon Knight has been his most stunning yet, bringing with it a brand new mission for the hero’s future. However, this doesn’t mean that the former Avenger has escaped his past. Fortunately, in Moon Knight #4 (by Jed Mackay, Alessandro Cappuccio, Rachel Rosenberg, and VC’s Cory Petit), his closest ally from the West Coast Avengers shows up to help him reconcile his issues.
Marc Spector has done a lot of good work in the short time since his return to the streets under the banner of his new Midnight Mission. He has also had the help of Dr. Andrea Sterman, a therapist provided to him by the Avengers. Although the two have developed a fair amount of rapport between them, it has still proven difficult for Marc to open up entirely. Luckily, he has another close friend in the form of his former teammate and love interest Tigra, who has just stepped back into his life at the perfect time.
Greer Grant aka Tigra has been a part of the Marvel Universe for nearly fifty years, and her history with Marc Spector goes back nearly as far as her origin. When Hawkeye formed the West Coast Avengers, Tigra was one of the founding members of the new team. It wasn’t long after that Moon Knight joined the team as well, and the two heroes quickly formed a close connection. Although their ensuing relationship did not last long, it was deeply meaningful for them both.
When Mockingbird was being tormented by the ghost of the Phantom Rider, who she had let fall to his death after taking control of her mind and assaulting her, Tigra and Moon Knight were the only two members of the team who remained by her side in spite of what happened. Together they were able to free Mockingbird of the ghost that was haunting her, and in the process they uncovered the Moon God Khonshu’s presence within Spector’s mind. Unfortunately, the couple split up following this revelation, with Tigra returning to the Avengers without Marc.
As Tigra returns, both she and Doctor Sterman observe that Marc hasn’t taken his mask off since he started the Midnight Mission. From what he told his therapist, the mask has almost literally become an essential part of him. As the Fist of Khonshu, Spector declared that he now wears the Moon God’s face as well, acting as his priest.
However, Marc reveals to Tigra an entirely different reason for his actions. Wearing the mask keeps him from having to look at his own face and keeps him from having to acknowledge all the brutal things he has done in his life. From carving crescent moons into people’s faces to turning against the Avengers in an effort to help Khonshu take over the world, Marc has been the source of a lot of pain that he would rather not deal with, and essentially hiding from himself is the easiest way to do that.
Although Marc feels alone in his pain, Tigra has just reminded him that he still has friends who are willing to help him. Even if he doesn’t see it, there are people who genuinely care about his well being. His former teammate and love interest showed him that he doesn’t have to walk his current road alone, and that might be just what he needs to be the version of Moon Knight that the world needs.
