Total War: Warhammer 3 Should Reintroduce Chaos Dwarfs

[ad_1]

Warhammer Fantasy had many different armies during its lifetime, and Total War is the perfect game to bring them back.

When Warhammer released its fantasy range it did so with only a few armies for players to engage with. Games Workshop spent the course of the game’s lifecycle adding more races to the game, but they didn’t always stick around. Occasionally, forces would be introduced only to be dropped in later editions or only made available for specific campaigns. However Total War: Warhammer III has the chance to reintroduce these forces and make them work better than they did on the tabletop.

A good example would be the Kislev faction, which originally appeared as part of the “Storm Of Chaos” event but faded afterward. This army was distinct, but its timing and the issues with the campaign meant that they never made a huge impact. Total War has decided to reintroduce this army and flesh them out, but this isn’t the only force that should get this treatment. There is another army that has only been briefly mentioned in the lore and deserves a chance to shine.

The Dwarfs are one of the staple races of the Warhammer world. The sons of Grimnir are strong and stalwart and were designed to be resistant to magic and, therefore, Chaos by the old ones. However, while they couldn’t fall due to outside influences, there was nothing to stop them from choosing to follow the dark gods. Chaos Dwarfs, known as Dawi-Zharr to their cousins, were a group who fell to the influence of a powerful demon and turned from the worship of their ancestors. They are the forge masters of the legions of chaos and made an appearance as the crew of the Hellcannon. While they’ve only been briefly mentioned within Warhammer lore, they were given an army list at one point.

If introduced as a playable race in Total War, Chaos Dwarfs would be the perfect antithesis to the normal dwarfs players are used to. In addition to having access to war machines, they can also use magic by inscribing runes onto their skin. This makes them a considerable threat, but it also slowly turns them to stone. Their army would be more than just war machines, however, as the Chaos Dwarfs are also the master slavers and beast tamers of the Chaos forces. They often use these poor creatures as soldiers to make up for their low numbers. The Chaos Dwarfs often try to improve upon their slaves and were the original creators of the Black Orcs and even Grimgor.

Introducing these evil dwarfs would allow players to control a massively varied army. Imagine hordes of cheap infantry made up of enslaved orcs, elves and humans flanked by monstrous combinations of flesh and steel. These ragged troops would be supported by massive machines, all the while being watched over by twisted renditions of the noble Dwarf. Not only would the armies be visually impressive, but the playstyle would be distinct from most Chaos armies, providing some variation to the usually close combat-focused legions of the north. Their unique relationship with certain races would also allow for a variety of special missions for players to complete, such as bringing Grimgor back to heel.

Total War: Warhammer has done a great job introducing factions and, in some cases, improving them. The games have helped to keep Warhammer Fantasy alive for fans. However, there are still many races for the games to introduce, and it should do so. Hopefully, the Dawi-Zharr get their chance to plague the old world in service to the dark gods again.
