Titles give players a glimpse into what to expect when picking up a game for the first time. New entries in beloved series allow players to follow a story and characters’ journeys or continue using familiar gameplay mechanics. Unique titles give a peek into globetrotting adventures or world-saving missions.
With so many games releasing each week, it’s no wonder that gamers are confronted with strikingly similar titles for games that can be such different experiences. This confusion is compounded when games with similar titles are released not too far apart from each other. Sometimes it feels as though developers spoke to each other beforehand to create similar names.
9 Running From Horrors In Dying Light And Dead By Daylight
With similar themes between them and the concept of death a very real possibility, Dead by Daylight and Dying Light are similar enough that a similar title just makes things more confusing. While Dying Light tasks players with running and parkouring around a middle-eastern city infested with zombies, Dead by Daylight forces a team of four players to work together to survive being hunted down by a savage killer.
Horror in games is a common experience and many games in the genre have death or dying in the title but with such similar titles, it can be difficult to tell the two apart.
8 Solving A Mystery In Gone Home and Climbing Plants In Grow Home
Indie game Gone Home and Grow Home don’t have a lot of similarities. A first-person exploration game about finding what happened to the main characters missing family members and a third-person game about robot climbing plants couldn’t be themed further away from each other. Such differing experiences being separated by only a few letters can cause some confusion.
The beauty of video games is that players can be active participants in these two diverse experiences and stories. Gone Home and Grow Home are similar enough in title but not so similar in gameplay and theme.
7 Exploring Space In The Outer Worlds and Outer Wilds
Space exploration is a matching idea in The Outer Worlds and Outer Wilds. With both being released only five months apart, it’s no surprise that gamers were constantly juggling which game was which in their minds and in conversation. With similar titles, it could come as a shock that both games offer vastly different experiences.
The Outer Worlds takes place in an alternate future with society controlled by mega-corporations. Outer Wilds, on the other hand, is a looping cycle to survive a sun going supernova. Players were spoiled in being given two exciting space-themed games in such a short amount of time.
6 Fighting Against The Odds In God Of War And Gears Of War
Only a few years after the launch of the original Xbox and Playstation 2, gamers were presented with two similarly titled yet drastically different gameplay experiences. God of War tells the hack and slash tale of a spartan fighting back the Greek gods. A high octane blood-fueled adventure might seem like a difficult thing to confuse with a gritty war with underground invaders.
Gears of War has the same abbreviation while being a drastically different experience. Each console rewarded players with innovative games with similar titles. However, identical abbreviations can make it confusing to separate the two.
5 Knights Of Different Flavors In Shovel Knight And Hollow Knight
Side-scrolling adventure games can be seen as a relic from a bygone era of gaming but Shovel Knight and Hollow Knight are a glorious return to those 2D styles some gamers grew up playing. The unique art style of each captivates the player and helps separate the two more so than the similar titles.
It’s easy to see how players can confuse the two as both pay tribute to gaming’s past. Gamers can play as a knight swinging and bouncing on a shovel in Shovel Knight or a knight uncovering the mysteries of a puzzling castle in Hollow Knight. Both games give the player a rewarding experience that they are sure to come back to.
4 Finding The Enemy In Freedom Force And Freedom Fighters
Taking the fight to supervillains and militia groups is the theme of Freedom Force and Freedom Fighters, respectively. Players had a choice between a third-person shooter in Freedom Fighters or a top-down role-playing game in Freedom Force.
Coming from the brilliant minds who brought gamers to Rapture and the UNN Von Braun in Bioshock and System Shock 2, Freedom Force gives players another setting to love in Patriot City. Both games give the player a fantastic setting and intriguing characters along their journey. If not somewhat forgotten in the test of time.
3 Exploring Open Worlds In Watch Dogs And Sleeping Dogs
With the show-stopping announcement that Watch Dogs had at E3 2012, it created a stir in the gaming community and it seemed that nothing could stand up to it. That is until Sleeping Dogs was released and the pair had a similar title and scope. Open-world games set in familiar cities are not the only resemblance these two third-person games have in common.
However, while Watch Dogs as a series has gone on to feature two more releases in 2016 and 2020, Sleeping Dogs has unfortunately been put on hold and the first entry has remained the only entry.
2 Splitting Atoms in Quantum Break And Quantum Theory
Quantum Theory and Quantum Break share a very similar title however they don’t share much more than name. Gamers have a choice between the Gears of War style cover-and-shoot mechanics of Quantum Theory and the time manipulation film-like experience of Quantum Break. Sharing a third-person viewpoint, Quantum Theory and Quantum Break both have a science fiction backdrop to tell their stories.
Quantum Theory takes place in a post-apocalyptic world with heavy science fiction elements whereas Quantum Break has players walking through more grounded locations and settings in the fictional US city of Riverport. With such contrasting styles and gameplay, a similar title can still be enough to mix the pair up.
1 Eternal Eden And Eden Eternal Share More Than Name
Whether players are looking for a Japanese-style MMO or a Japanese-style RPG, Eternal Eden and Eden Eternal fit the bill. Eternal Eden brings players to a utopia and tasks them with battling enemies in a tile-based combat system. Bringing to mind similar titles in its JRPG genre, such as early Final Fantasy entries, Eternal Eden has tons to offer to players.
On the reverse, Eden Eternal offers players a massive online world to explore with other players. With such similar titles, gamers are offered strikingly separate experiences.
