New images from Spider-Man: No Way Home suggest Doc Ock may be getting an upgrade with some tech from the MCU’s Iron Man – or Spider-Man himself.
The upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe collide with other universes from the wall-crawler’s cinematic history. In the midst of this crisis in the multiverse, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is set to come face-to-face with foes first fought by Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the webhead. Chief amongst them is Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, last seen in 2004 in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. While fans are hoping to see the MCU’s Spidey team up with his predecessors from alternate realities, Spider-Man might not be the only one seeking help from across the multiverse.
The array of deadly enemies due to face Peter Parker in No Way Home could also be looking to bolster their strength by taking advantage of the MCU’s unique offerings. One new image shows Molina’s Doctor Octopus with a touch of red and gold added to his mechanical tentacles. Fans have been quick to draw a connection to Tony Stark’s Iron Man tech, pondering whether the supervillain may have taken advantage of the MCU’s advanced technology to improve his own.
The image, one of several released by Empire Magazine, shows a snarling Otto Octavius equipped with the improved arms. Little else is given away, though its highway setting — including a car hanging by a web from the bridge overhead — might suggest this is a moment from the scene glimpsed in the trailer, which sees Ock confronting Peter Parker when he is seemingly on his way to or from court. Interestingly, other shots from this scene do not appear to include the Iron Man-themed augmentation to the mechanical arms. But one other new image might explain the upgrade.
In another look at this showdown between Doc Ock and Spider-Man, Spidey is shown trapped in Ock’s grip, hoisted off the ground by one metal tentacle as another grabs him by the head. Spider-Man is wearing the Iron Spider armor in this scene, originally given to him by Tony Stark in Avengers: Infinity War (after first being glimpsed in Spider-Man: Homecoming). Following Tony’s death in Avengers: Endgame, the Iron Spider suit is one of the few suits of Stark tech armor still in use in the MCU and possibly the only one still being used that utilizes Tony’s nanotech. While he has Spider-Man in his grip, Doc Ock could be absorbing the nanobots that make up Spidey’s suit, repurposing the Iron Spider technology to strengthen his own arms. Such a move would not only strengthen Ock, but leave Spider-Man without one of his most powerful assets just as he’s about to need all the help he can get.
Of course, there are other possible explanations for the new augmentation to Ock’s arms. A brilliant scientist in his own right, Otto Octavius could have made the adjustments on his own Earth, following his supposed death at the end of Spider-Man 2. However, Molina’s earlier comments, claiming that Otto’s story picks up “from ‘that moment’ in the river,” along with his digital de-aging in No Way Home, might suggest that Doc Ock has entered the MCU moments after he was seen drifting off into the water in Spider-Man 2‘s finale. What’s not yet known is how long he is in this universe before he confronts Peter Parker. No Way Home may see Ock breaking into an Avengers facility — or even a disused SHIELD one — to steal Stark’s tech for his own sinister purposes.
The thought of Otto Octavius harnessing Tony Stark’s technology poses some terrifying possibilities for the MCU’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. While he has already faced foes equipped with technology stolen from Tony Stark or the Avengers’ foes, none of them possessed the formidable mind of Doctor Octopus. If one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes is about to wield some of the MCU’s most advanced technology, the wall-crawler is going to need all the help he can get.
To see Spidey go up against an upgraded Doc Ock, Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters Dec. 17.
