Daniel Henney, who plays the Warder Lan in The Wheel of Time, says that embodying the character’s stillness taught him something valuable as an actor.
Daniel Henney plays a deadly warrior in Prime Video’s upcoming The Wheel of Time, but the challenges he faced portraying his character weren’t all physical.
In an interview with The Dusty Wheel show on YouTube, Henney was asked about what the role of Lan Mandragoran demanded of him. “Well, I mean, the physical demands are definitely the toughest, but I think, as an actor, I’ve really grown a lot with him, which is nice,” Henney replied. “I mean, he’s taught me a lot. I think he’s such a still character. He’s very strong in his silence, he’s not always at the front of everything.”
Lan acts as a kind of bodyguard to Rosamund Pike’s Aes Sedai character, Moiraine, which means that he lets her lead the way and may often appear to be subservient to her. Henney went on to discuss Lan’s laconic personality and relative lack of dialogue, saying. “You might see him in the background, like packing saddlebags, talking to a horse, or like, I don’t know, he’s always just comfortable in his own silence. And as an actor, you kind of want to perform, you want to add something, you feel like you want to do something. And playing Lan’s really taught me just to be still and to work within that silence.”
“It’s really special,” Henney concluded, crediting both the character and the author who created him in The Wheel of Time book series: “So I owe him a lot. But I guess I owe Robert Jordan a lot too.”
The other cast members in the interview, Madeleine Madden and Zoë Robins, followed up by laughing about how little Lan spoke. Henney joined in the fun, joking, “…I haven’t actually spoken throughout the whole show. A lot of times, people would just kind of attack me, and I’d just go [mimics a dodge and grunt].”
The wait for The Wheel of Time has been longer than expected, due to initial difficulties in securing rights to the property and then delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the series is now well underway, with Season 2 announced in May this year and production on it having begun in July.
The first three episodes of The Wheel of Time Season 1 will premiere on Amazon on November 19.
