What We Do in the Shadows pulls off a sinister resurrection in the Season 3 finale and it ends up giving the vulgar Laszlo his toughest job yet.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 10, “The Portrait,” now available on Hulu via FX.
One of the biggest shockers in What We Do in the Shadows came in Season 3’s penultimate episode when Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) died on his 100th birthday. It left fans stunned as there weren’t signs at all that he was sick or that energy vampires had an expiry date. Well, come the finale, the show produces a sinister resurrection tied to Colin, but there’s a unique and very dramatic twist involved that gives Laszlo (Matt Berry) his toughest job yet.
Laszlo’s been into pure debauchery in this series, interested only in drinking and sexcapades with Nadja, his vampire wife. But this season, the profanity-inclined Laszlo has displayed a warmer side, looking out for his human friends and spending time with Colin on missions as a true buddy.
He did learn of Colin’s fate, keeping it a secret from Nandor and Co., which is why he’s now hesitant to say goodbye to Colin’s dead body, or New York on the whole, as he can’t handle letting go. As such, when Nadja wants him to go with her back to London, keeping it mum that she plans to rule on the Worldwide Vampiric Council, he says no. But he eventually reveals it’s not about his failure to deal with his grief — it’s because the Sherwood Club of London was classist and looked down on Nadja’s commoner heritage, thus he wants no part of their classist system.
However, when Nadja indicates that Laszlo will have more power this time around as she admits her job offer, he’s all in as he’s an egomaniac, after all. But things change drastically when he boxes her up in a coffin on the port. Rather than go into his box, Laszlo ambushes Guillermo and drops him in it, leaving a letter for him to bodyguard Nadja as Laszlo can’t go anymore.
The final moments then reveal while they were all packing to leave the Staten Island coven, as Laszlo bid Colin’s corpse adieu in the room, he found that something burst out from the body, only to discover a baby version of Colin with the iconic glasses as well. Laszlo’s left stunned as he knows nothing about energy vampires, but in his letter, he admits he needs to shoulder this burden as the kid has no one else.
In a mini time-jump, the show ends with him putting up the coven’s new portrait and baby Colin screaming, which leaves fans wondering how Laszlo will cope as everyone else pursues their dreams outside the Big Apple.
He’s got no patience and it seems it’s him alone, so it’ll be intriguing watching him be a responsible dad — his unlikeliest position yet. It’ll also be interesting to see how Guillermo and Nadja are dealing with Laszlo’s betrayal, and how this vulgar bunch will parent what’s clearly an even more annoying version of Colin once they reunite.
All 10 episodes of What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 are streaming now on Hulu via FX.
