Captain Marvel’s fight has just brought her to the edge of the galaxy, where she faces forgotten fallout of the war between the Avengers and X-Men.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Captain Marvel #33, available now from Marvel.
The name Captain Marvel carries with it a whole host of presumed responsibilities, and no one knows that better than Carol Danvers. Not only has she carried the weight of that mantle for years now, but she has seen firsthand just how heavy it was for every other hero to bear it. Even worse is the fact that now she is battling against the most twisted versions of almost every Marvel to date, all of them being held as pawns in a conspiracy born from the death of the very first of them all. Mar-Vell might be long gone, but his secret legacy has only flourished.
Captain Marvel has been locked in brutal combat against other Marvels, all trapped within the same mind-altering dark suits which Vox Supreme had trapped Carol herself within not all that long ago. To make matters worse, the small army of superpowered assailants have come to make Kamala Khan one of their own, and saving her cost Carol three more of her allies.
Thankfully, Monica Rambeau was able to break her suit’s control long enough to give Carol the coordinates to where they were being taken, leading Captain Marvel to a once desolate planet far across the cosmos. It’s a world that Carol recognizes as the one where Mar-Vell last fell, and it seems his essence has changed transformed it entirely in a very short amount of time.
2012’s Avengers vs. X-Men event saw the two superhero teams come into conflict over how to best handle the Phoenix Force, then making its way towards Earth. While the X-Men welcomed the cosmic raptor’s arrival, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes wished only to drive it back. Lucky for the Avengers, the Phoenix was drawn away from Earth by the resurrection of the original Captain Marvel back on the Kree home world of Hala. Only a couple of issues after his return, Mar-Vell sacrificed himself to reroute the Phoenix force once more, sending it away from Hala and ultimately saving his planet in 2012’s Secret Avengers #28 by Rick Remender and Renato Guedes.
As seen shortly after Mar-Vell’s demise, the barren world that his body fell to sprouted its first plant life thanks to the hero’s latent energies. It was a beautiful moment full of hope when it happened, but now it has been twisted into something devastating, as seen in the pages of Captain Marvel #33 by Kelly Thompson, Sergio Davila, Sean Parsons, Jesus Aburtov, and VC’s Clayton Cowles.
Vox Supreme’s hideout is easy enough to find, and Carol wastes no time in smashing her way into it to confront the villain. She isn’t shocked that Vox Supreme would desecrate what should be a place of reverence, though she is caught completely off guard by what exactly Vox is doing there. Not only have Carol’s friends been kidnapped, they have been turned into the power source for a machine housing what appears to be the remains of Genis-Vell, the deceased son of Mar-Vell who was killed after proving himself to be a threat to the entire universe. From the looks of things, Genis has been resurrected just like his father was, and now he is poised to become the greatest weapon in Vox Supreme’s already terrifying arsenal.
Losing Mar-Vell the first time was already one of the worst moments in Carol Danvers’ life, and his death the second time wasn’t any easier. That Vox Supreme has turned what could have been a genuinely heartwarming part of that legacy into the start of his own nascent empire is a slap in the face at best. At worst it’s a dark omen for things to come, and at this point it’s hard to imagine it isn’t already the latter. With any luck, Carol will be able to put an end to Vox Supreme’s plans, and just maybe she’ll even be able to salvage the world touched by Mar-Vell’s death in the process.
