Any anime fan who has spent their childhood watching Pokémon along with Sailor Moon or Mew Mew Power will have imagined what a crossover between their favorite magical girls and cute, superpowered critters would have looked like. Saving the world is no easy task, after all, and even the most powerful of magical girls could use a little help sometimes.
The most iconic magical girls, from series from the ’90s all the way up to the 2010s, all have different Pokémon that would suit them best. Whether they match the girls’ personalities. powers, or outfits, there’s a perfect Pokémon partner for everyone.
10 Himeno Awayuki Would Have Eevee
Himeno Awayuki, the main character of Prétear, is a unique magical girl in that her transformation depends on which member of the “Leafe Knights,” and entourage of young men from another world, she chooses to borrow her powers from. Each of the Knights has control over one element, such as fire, plants, or water.
This is bound to remind any Pokémon fan of Eevee, the Normal-type Pokémon that, when exposed to different elemental stones or conditions, can evolve into many different species, with a type matching the stone or condition.
9 Rinko Kougyoku Would Have Diancie
It’s obvious that the Mythical Jewel Pokémon Diancie would be the perfect companion for the main character of the first installment in the Jewelpet anime franchise. Diancie’s gems are even pink, which is Rinko and her Jewelpet, Ruby’s, signature color.
These two would match in more than just their appearance, however. Diancie is able to Mega Evolve into Mega Diancie, a stunning display of delicate crystals. This mirrors the way the often timid Rinko is able to come out of her shell to work with Ruby and protect the world.
8 Cure Black & Cure White Would Have Plusle & Minun
The entire point of Futari wa Pretty Cure, the first installment in the long-running Pretty Cure series of magical girl shows, is that it’s the friendship between the two girls that gives them their power.
Their ideal Pokémon, then, should also share a close bond. This means that the perfect choice would be Plusle and Minun. These adorable Electric-types have matching designs and abilities and are almost always seen together in both the games and the anime.
7 Sakura Kinamoto Would Have Meowth
The most important thing that Sakura Kinomoto, the titular character from CLAMP’s Cardcaptor Sakura, will be looking for in a Pokémon is the willingness to get along with her original companion, Kero. This mischievous little creature doesn’t exactly act like the powerful mentor he’s supposed to be. Because of that, he became a hit with fans and arguably the most iconic magical girl mascot of all time.
Meowth is similarly adorable, but with a troublemaking streak. Plus, if he’s anything like Meowth from the anime, he can be Sakura’s second talking animal companion.
6 Nurse Witch Komugi Would Have Blissey
Nurse Witch Komugi is a parody anime starring an anime-obsessed cosplayer who ends up being drafted as a magical girl to defeat the King of Viruses. It certainly doesn’t take itself too seriously, but its adorable character designs and unique medical-themed aesthetic has earned it a soft spot in many fans’ hearts.
No Pokémon fits that aesthetic better than Blissey, which is so associated with healing that it’s often seen as Nurse Joy’s companion in the anime. Blissey’s little white “wings” on its shoulders even match the ones on the back of Komugi’s outfit.
5 Amu Hinamori Would Have Togekiss
“All kids hold an egg in their soul,” says a narrator at the beginning of every episode of Shugo Chara. In-universe, these eggs represent the people who children will “hatch” into as they grow up. Protagonist Amu isn’t quite sure who she wants to be yet, though. That means she has three different magical girl personas that she can transform into, from three different eggs, as she accepts all the different sides of herself.
No Pokémon represents this better than Togekiss. As the final evolution of Togepi, its evolutionary line shows it finally hatching from its egg and taking to the skies.
4 Madoka Kaname Would Have Jirachi
One of Generation III’s Mythical Pokémon, Jirachi has the incredible ability to make any wish come true. And no one knows how powerful a single wish can be better than Madoka Kaname, the main character of the smash hit magical girl deconstruction Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
With just one wish at the end of the series, Madoka is able to completely reinvent the universe, and save hundreds of other magical girls. And, when it comes to a cute companion to grant her wish, Jirachi would have been a lot less sinister than Kyubey.
3 Mew Ichigo Would Have Mew
The clue’s in the name as to why Mew Ichigo, the protagonist of the iconic early 2000s series Tokyo Mew Mew, would definitely have the original Mythical Pokémon Mew as her companion. Their two designs are also very similar, sharing a sugar-pink color palette and being based on cats.
Mew is said to contain the DNA of all other Pokémon — which is why it can transform into them and learn every TM move. Mew Ichigo is also linked to genetics, and her mission to save the world begins when she has her DNA spliced with that of an Iriomote Wildcat.
2 Princess Tutu Would Have Kirlia
Princess Tutu is a cult classic series that has a unique visual flair thanks to the way protagonist Ahiru, aka Princess Tutu herself, “fights” her enemies through the medium of ballet. The perfect dance partner for her, then, is Kirlia. This Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon resembles a ballet dancer in the midst of a perfect pirouette.
Kirlia is also known to be extremely sensitive to the emotions of its trainer, which perfectly suits Ahiru’s empathetic, caring personality. The Pokémon will also go well with how Princess Tutu is drawn to helping those suffering from emotional problems.
1 Sailor Moon Would Have Cresselia
There’s no doubt that Sailor Moon is the most legendary magical girl out there, so it’s only fitting that she would have a Legendary Pokémon as her companion. And, with its lunar motif, the Generation IV Legendary Cresselia would undoubtedly be the one for her.
Like all magical girls, including the most famous one of all, Cresselia is opposed to all forces of evil and darkness, as exemplified by her opposition to Darkrai, the Pokémon that acts as the physical manifestation of nightmares. These two would definitely be a force for good, and one to be reckoned with.
