Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia has grown into one of the biggest anime obsessions of the decade. The exciting shonen series now has over 100 episodes under its belt, and there’s no end in sight when it comes to the progressively impressive heroic efforts of Izuku Midoriya and his fellow hero friends. My Hero Academia has showcased a wide range of Pro Heroes that Midoriya and company look up to as role models.
These Pro Heroes often boast dangerous Quirks and legendary accomplishments, but their costumes and the looks that they put out into the world are also important. Many of the heroes in the anime have striking appearances, but some of these hero costumes are more practical than others, with some completely prioritizing style over common sense.
10 Izuku Midoriya’s Initial Hero Costume Makes Him Look Like A Joke
Izuku Midoriya is My Hero Academia’s main character and so there are obviously going to be some extra critical opinions launched over how he presents himself to the world. To the series’ credit, Deku’s hero costume has gone through a series of revisions and it’s currently in a decent place that’s both practical as well as sentimental in its approach. However, Midoriya’s first official costume is a green jumpsuit that strangely completes its ensemble with a donkey-like mask. This odd mask doesn’t fit Deku or his Quirk and it’s comforting that it’s quickly abandoned after it initially takes damage.
9 Kyoka Jiro’s Ensemble Doesn’t Do Enough To Stand Out
My Hero Academia has done satisfying work to slowly develop its supporting characters, which has allowed certain caricatures like Kyoka Jiro to comfortably evolve into real people. Jiro’s Earphone Jack Quirk is quite unique, but it’s oddly subtle and can be missed. Jiro’s hero costume also takes a minimalist approach and it’s hard to tell the difference between them and her civilian clothes. Jiro’s attire is totally pedestrian, but it could still find a way to reflect Jiro’s powers. For instance, Kaminari adopts a similar plain clothes costume, but it at least carries patterns that push his electric branding.
8 Gang Orca’s Attire Turns His Whale Status Into A Gag
Most of the Pro Heroes in My Hero Academia are treated with a certain level of reverence, and Gang Orca is especially respected due to both his reputation and killer instinct attitude. Gang Orca’s Quirk has him resemble a killer whale, which is something that can’t really be concealed.
Orca’s costume turns certain aspects of his whale physiology into a costume, like how his tongue is a tie or a cape that’s formed from fins. None of this amplifies his Quirk and instead it actually makes him come across as a bit of a parody of an aquatic hero.
7 Midnight’s Costume Leaves Little To The Imagination, Which Is Part Of The Problem
Nemuri Kayama, better known under her Pro Hero alias, Midnight, is easily one of the flashier heroes, much to many other characters’ frustration. There are plenty of Marvel and DC superheroes who wear costumes that tend to show off their bodies more than powers, which is the strategy taken by Midnight. Midnight has a tight bodysuit and a whip accessory that push a dominatrix aesthetic, but it’s an energy that doesn’t really mesh with her hero persona or Somnambulist Quirk. Midnight’s costume gets a lot of attention, but not necessarily for the right reasons.
6 Mina Ashido Keeps It Simple And Becomes Forgettable In The Process
Mina Ashido is a Class 1-A student who doesn’t always get to take the spotlight, but she consistently proves herself to be a reliable ally and a valuable asset. Mina Ashido’s Acid Quirk is quite dangerous in theory, but Ashido’s attire really diminishes what she can accomplish with her powers. It barely looks like Ashido even has a hero costume. The splatter pattern on her leotard is evocative of her acid powers, but it’s such a minor detail. Ashido’s look puts her comfort above anything else and there are so many accessories that could maximize her Quirk’s potential.
5 Vlad King’s Look Could Lean Harder Into The Basics Of His Blood Quirk
Vlad King is one of the educators at U.A. High that looks over Class 1-B’s students. Vlad King, as his name indicates, is a Pro Hero with a blood-based Quirk, which makes him the closest thing that My Hero Academia has to a vampire.
Admittedly, Vlad King’s costume has an IV tube that corresponds to his power, but the rest of it reflects purely aesthetic choices. Vlad King has a standard hero look with a deep v-neck and a fashionable yellow visor. There’s a lot more that could be done with the vampire angle.
4 Yuga Aoyama Can’t Curb His Flair For Fashion
Many conventional super powers are on display in My Hero Academia, but part of the series’ fun is all of the more ridiculous Quirks that come out of the woodwork. Yuga Aoyama and his Navel Laser Quirk are a good example: he’s a hero that’s able to propel a powerful beam of energy from his belly button. Aoyama’s costume does put a lot of attention on his navel, which is appropriate, but the rest of it is pure excess. Aoyama’s costume features a lavish cape and a masquerade-like mask, which are all unnecessary touches.
3 Mt. Lady Becomes A Giant Spectacle
One of the very first heroes to appear in My Hero Academia is the enormous Mt. Lady, also known as Yu Takeyama during her off hours. Mt. Lady has become an eyesore for some because of how her Quirk allows her to grow to a gigantic size. Takeyama wears a malleable bodysuit that’s able to accommodate her shifting size, which also doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Mt Lady sports horns, which could perhaps be construed to have a mountain connection, but her costume otherwise feels quite random. Various patterns or designs speak to the idea of mountains and growth.
2 Nana Shimura Sticks To Superhero Basics
When My Hero Academia begins, Nana Shimura has unfortunately already passed, but the details surrounding her life slowly get filled in as Midoriya and Shigaraki get further along on their journeys. Nana Shimura is a prolific figure in the sense that she trained All Might and used to be a former One For All bearer. Shimura possessed extreme power in addition to her standard Float Quirk, but her hero costume is incredibly regular. Shimura wears the standard superhero cape and getup, which doesn’t do anything to accentuate what makes her special.
1 Ectoplasm Looks Like A Creep Rather Than A Hero
Ectoplasm is an individual in My Hero Academia who hasn’t received a ton of attention, which honestly might have to do with the hero’s aggressive appearance. Ectoplasm has a Quirk that allows him to produce clones by throwing out globs of himself. It’s a powerful ability, but Ectoplasm’s costume is basically just a big trench coat and a frightening mask. This look makes it seem as if Ectoplasm has something to hide or shouldn’t be trusted, which is the last thing that the public should feel about a hero.
