An exclusive article featuring new images from Spider-Man: No Way Home includes a particularly interesting description of the film’s many villains.
The caption of the most recent still from Spider-Man: No Way Home hints at the multiversal villains set to appear in the highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
Released in an exclusive issue of Empire Magazine, the image appears to come from Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) first battle with Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock. The caption of the image reads: “Spider-Man: No Way Home isn’t just a sequel — it’s a massive, meta, multiverse outing in which Peter Parker finds himself fighting iconic villains from past lives. As its creators tell us, this is nothing less than ‘Spider-Man: Endgame.'”
The image itself featured Doc Ock attempting to crush Tom Holland’s Peter Parker with his metallic tentacles. Molina first appeared as Otto Octavius/Doc Ock in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and will reprise his role for the MCU’s No Way Home. While Molina’s return was confirmed long before the first trailer for No Way Home was released, what is presumably his first battle with Holland’s Web-Slinger was teased in the trailer, along with the return of another iconic Spider-Man villain: Green Goblin.
Willem Dafoe, who first appeared as Norman Osborne/Green Goblin in 2002’s Spider-Man, the first entry in Sam Raimi’s beloved trilogy, has played coy when asked if he will reprise his role in the upcoming MCU film, offering “no comment” when pressed by interviewers. However, the film’s first trailer also featured Green Goblin’s infamous pumpkin bombs and maniacal laugh, but whether it will be Dafoe behind the mask has not been confirmed.
It has been rumored that No Way Home may introduce a live-action version of the Sinister Six. For now, with No Way Home wrapping up the Holland trilogy, at least for now, the confirmed villains coming back include Doctor Octopus, Electro, Green Goblin, Sandman and The Lizard. However, director Tom Watts later said the returns of Sandman and Lizard were only “rumors.”
In the same interview, Watts described the film as “Spider-Man: Endgame,” a reference to Avengers: Endgame, which was the penultimate conclusion of the MCU’s Phase 3 and a culmination of all the films that came before it. This was also referenced in the caption for this newest image, so several Spider-Man villains from Peter’s past lives will, indeed, appear in the upcoming film. “We’re definitely trying to be ambitious,” said Watts.
Recently, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal explained why they decided to bring back so many past villains from other Spider-Man films. “We knew we were forcing ourselves to deal with his identity being revealed.”Now we see how his senior year is thrown into utter chaos,” Feige said about the Far From Home post-credits scene.
“The Multiverse was a good way for us to explore the problem of him becoming known to everyone,” Pascal continued. “Peter opens Pandora’s box. And that’s what the Multiverse is.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17.
