Spider-Man: No Way Home looks to change up Peter’s suit, but what do these suits mean for the character’s new adventure and his future?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films have set themselves apart from other Spider-Man franchises by introducing a multitude of suits. Not only does this mix up the character’s look and nod to his many comic outfits, but it also plays a role in Peter Parker’s story. That being said, in what way do Peter’s latest suits apply to him in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and could they have even grander implications for his role in the MCU?
As Peter continues to grow as a person and a hero, his suits have served as a visual representation of that growth. However, they also have a function depending on the circumstances of the film therein. This is first established in Captain America: Civil War, where his homemade suit consists of sweats, makeshift goggles and web-shooters. They got the job done, but they also represented how new Peter was to the world of superheroes. The homemade suit would later serve as a defining moment for him in Spider-Man: Homecoming when he lost his Stark suit and was left to his own devices to stop Vulture.
Civil War and Homecoming helped immensely in showcasing the Stark suit, as well. Sporting a more classic design, the Stark suit streamlined the web-shooters, offered variations of webbing and introduced an AI to help Peter better navigate superheroing. What makes the suit narratively important is that he had to earn it. The first time he did was in Civil War due to his early days as Spider-Man, and the second time was after he had it taken from him by Stark for disobeying his orders and endangering lives. Ultimately, the suit represented a glimpse at Peter’s future, but one he wasn’t prepared for.
Homecoming also introduced the Iron Spider suit. This particular design was outfitted with nanotech that formed around Peter’s Stark tech suit in Avengers: Infinity War. The suit offered protection, survivability in space and four extra limbs. From a film perspective, the suit aided Peter in the battles against Thanos. Narratively, it showed how Tony, who wanted to put a suit of armor around the world, settled by protecting those he had a close connection with. However, the suit would later become a grim reminder for Peter in Spider-Man: Far From Home following Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame.
Leaving the Iron Spider suit in New York, Peter donned the Night Monkey stealth outfit to protect his identity from his class. It also showed how he hid from his own potential behind his doubts of being a hero without Tony Stark. These doubts later became his strength after creating the upgraded suit that was a mix of Stark tech and Peter’s personal taste.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will see the upgraded suit go through more changes, including a black and gold suit that looks to channel magic. This is displayed in pictures where his spider symbol also features intricate shields similar to Doctor Strange’s.
Peter will also see the return of the Iron Spider suit when he faces off with Doc Ock. However, the most recent cover of Empire magazine shows a hybrid of the armored suit and the upgraded suit that shows a massive gold spider symbol. This could represent a culmination of Peter’s past, present and future to show how his suits have defined the character. However, it may also indicate that his future could be more streamlined and have him looking more like the comic version of the character as he continues to grow.
Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17.
