WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 4, “The Nexus Event,” streaming now on Disney+.
Loki, staying true to his title of The God of Mischief, has escaped death multiple times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and things haven’t changed in Loki. In Episode 4, the Asgardian Prince seemingly dies, only to be revealed to still be alive in the post-credits scene, where he is awoken by a group of other Loki variants. Before the big fight at the end of the episode, Loki even remarks about the amount times he has “died,” telling the faux Time-Keepers to do their worst. He has probably eluded death more times than what’s been shown on screen, but here are all the times Loki cheated death in the MCU.
Loki Is Abandoned as an Infant In Thor
Loki’s first brush with death was as an infant. Abandoned by his biological father as a baby, Loki was saved and adopted by Odin and Frigga. His adoptive parents kept his origins as a Frost Giant secret, raising him as their biological son. Finding out that they kept his identity secret is one of Loki’s main motivations throughout his journey in the early MCU. Loki is angry and lashes out because of his insecurities and the fact his parents lied to him about his origins. This is the first of many chips on Loki’s shoulder that forces him to lean into his status as the God of Mischief and cause so much havoc.
Loki Falls Into the Abyss in Thor
In Thor, Loki falls into the abyss after Thor destroys the rainbow bridge on Asgard. Loki hangs from his staff, the same staff he tried to impale his brother with 10 seconds before, and has an emotional moment with both Thor and Odin as they try to save him. After pleading with his father that he could have, in fact, been a great king and destroyed the world of the Frost Giants, Odin rebuffs Loki. So he lets go of his staff, falling into the void of space. He, of course, survives, and his falling into the abyss leads to him meeting Thanos, setting up The Avengers.
Loki Fakes His Death in Thor: The Dark World
In Thor: The Dark World, Loki saves Thor and, in the process, is “fatally” wounded. The two share another touching moment, where their brotherly love is on full display. Thor begs him to hold on and, as he realizes his brother is slipping away, says he will tell their father about Loki’s sacrifice. Loki responds that he didn’t do it for Odin, closes his eyes and passes. It is revealed shortly thereafter that the Trickster faked his death and assumed Odin’s identity, ruling over Asgard while Thor is off-world. Loki resurfaces in Thor: Ragnarok still masquerading as Odin and putting on stage plays of his exploits to honor himself, specifically the very scene where he faked his death.
Thanos ACTUALLY Kills Loki in Avengers: Infinity War
After the events of Thor: Ragnarok, Loki, the remaining population of Asgardians and the escaped gladiators from Sakaar are attacked by Thanos. They are soundly beaten, and in a last-ditch effort to stop the Mad Titan, Loki tries to use deception to get the upper hand. He pledges himself to Thanos to get close enough to assassinate him but is easily thwarted by the Titan, who wields multiple Infinity Stones at this point. Thanos strangles Loki, actually killing him as Thor looks on helplessly. In Avengers: Endgame, however, 2012 Loki gets ahold of the Tesseract and escapes, leading to the events of Loki.
Loki Gets Pruned in Episode 4, “The Nexus Event”
After finally being captured by the Time Variance Authority, Loki and Sylvie find themselves in front of the Time-Keepers to stand trial. After the pair break free and gain the upper hand, it is revealed that the Time-Keepers are robots being controlled by someone else. Loki tries to express his feelings to Sylvie but is attacked from behind by Renslayer with a TVA baton, which appears to disintegrate him. Loki dies at the moment when it seems he has found some level of purpose and a sort of self-love.
It is then revealed in a post-credits scene that Loki is not actually dead. He wakes up in a different dimension flanked by several different Loki variants, including Classic Loki, Kid Loki and Alligator Loki. It seems that the TVA batons phase people to another prison-like dimension to keep them out of the way. In short, the God of Mischief lives yet again, and hopefully, this also means Agent Mobius is alive and well, so the two can band together and stop whatever is going on with the TVA.
Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane and Eugene Cordero. New episodes air Wednesdays on Disney+.
