Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows confirmed the annoying Colin Robinson as the weirdest yet most powerful vampire in the New York coven.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 9, “The Farewell,” now available on Hulu via FX.
One of the most intriguing figures throughout three seasons of What We Do in the Shadows was Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), the energy vampire that annoyed everyone. Largely used as comedic relief and support as the coven’s vampires went about their Staten Island antics, this last season had finally allowed him more agency. Now, with his story brought to an abrupt end, it’s time to examine how despite the fact that he was the weirdest vampire in the stable, he was also the most powerful.
That’s a bold claim, as Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja are all brilliant strategists and fierce warriors. But Colin’s origin is more mysterious, which left fans wondering his true purpose. He was very quaint, always doing weird things, knowing odd trivia and driving people nuts. Still, Laszlo, at least, saw his worth, which is why he paid tribute to hin and tried to make his life happy, secretly knowing Colin would wither away as he turned 100.
The death is a tragic one as Colin passes on his bed, farting and not knowing he had an expiration date. As Laszlo honors him later, however, it’s clear he loved Colin for his antics just as much as his heart. That eccentric factor that was so very Colin was kicked up a notch in the previous episode, “The Wellness Center,” on Nandor’s Accession Day, where he’s supposed to celebrate his anniversary as the former ruler of Al-Quolanuda. Nandor was disenchanted with the fiesta, but Colin cut loose, revealing way too much skin as a belly dancer. And the thing is, he didn’t even do it for Nandor; he genuinely enjoyed it.
It got even stranger when Nandor left home to find himself, with Colin moving into his room. He marked Nandor’s furniture like a dog, farting instead of peeing, as he has a gastric system, unlike the others. He even loved the scent too, which freaked the documentary out. But be that as it may, it would have been a mistake to underestimate Colin.
While Laszlo didn’t find any reason for Colin’s condition, over the three seasons, we saw he didn’t really have vamp weaknesses like the others and could have actually walked in sunlight. He could also enter churches, plus as an energy vamp who sucks the life out of people by nagging them to sleep, Colin could have stealthily struck when no one knew.
In addition, while vamps have to take soil from their homeland so they can sleep outside their coffins, Colin didn’t need this. As such, if the others lose their dirt, they’ll be drained and die+, but Colin was able to sleep whenever he wanted.
It was a massive advantage to not be vulnerable or constrained in that regard. Colin also flexed his mental fortitude when the siren trapped Laszlo. Colin was mostly unaffected, loving her just because she was his type, which did impress Laszlo a lot. But ultimately, Laszlo had to get his buddy away so they could spend more time together at home, because Laszlo knew the end was nigh for someone he quietly considered a formidable soul and his best friend.
See Colin get weird but show how powerful he really is in What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, on Hulu via FX.
