Raven Beak is the final boss of Metroid Dread, who Samus confronts in his sky fortress Itorash to make sure he cannot escape ZDR and attempt his plan elsewhere. This final showdown is broken into four parts, which players will need to understand if they want to survive. Players struggle to succeed may also want to find more health and ammunition upgrades before taking Raven Beak on.
In this fight, Samus must break Raven Beak’s armor, destroy his wings and ultimately wear down his energy. The ending confrontation is a mere formality but still an awesome display of Samus’ full power. Defeating Raven Beak is only the first part of the endgame, however, as Samus will still need to reach her ship and escape.
Breaking Down the Fight Against Raven Beak: Stage One
Raven Beak uses six primary attacks during this first stage. When he is in close range, he will melee Samus, making it hard for her to escape until his onslaught is over. From a distance, he will fire a purplish-black orb that grows larger as it tracks toward Samus. Typically, this move will be immediately followed by a beam he fires straight into the air. This beam then fans out to cover the entire arena except for a small section where he is standing.
Samus can counter three of Raven Beak’s moves. The first is when he taunts her, beckoning her to engage him in close range. A prompt will appear, allowing Samus to counter Raven Beak when he readies a punch. Failing this prompt will have him hold his punch and move on to a new attack. Samus can also counter his lunge, indicated by a red flash when he pulls back to attack. When he barrels toward Samus like a spear, she has a short window to melee counter. Finally, Samus can trigger the final counter when all except a horizontal fraction of the lower screen is covered in a red wave, so as long as she crouched to avoid damage.
Strategies to Defeat Raven Beak: Stage One
Maintain as much distance as possible from Raven Beak during this section. If he traps Samus in a corner, he will use her to play ping-pong and deal serious damage. Make use of her Space Jump to stay out of his reach.
Next, be sure to always destroy the orbs. It only takes four Ice Missile shots to break one, and they will give Samus health and ammunition. When Raven Beak uses the radial beam attack, get in close to him. Once the beam disappears, immediately Flash Shift out of reach and Space Jump to safety.
Successfully countering roughly five of Raven Beak’s moves will damage his armor and trigger the second stage of the fight. Samus will also receive health and ammunition. She can otherwise shoot at him during this first stage, but he will not take damage from Arm Cannon shots while glowing gold.
Breaking Down the Fight Against Raven Beak: Stage Two
No longer encumbered by his armor, Raven Beak takes flight in stage two. This time, Samus does not need to counter his moves. Once Samus has dealt enough damage to Raven Beak, he will be grounded. Raven Beak himself uses four attacks.
If Raven Beak charges his arm cannon, he will fire a sustained beam at Samus. If he aims the red sight line onto Samus, he’s preparing to fire a volley of missiles like a machine gun. He will generally do this attack twice in a row. When Raven Beak is above Samus, he may dive downward. Other times, he will fold in his wings and barrel toward her.
Strategies to Defeat Raven Beak: Stage Two
When Raven Beak aims at Samus to begin firing his volley of Missiles, keep a circular movement around him. If he prepares his beam shot, time a slide or Flash Shift so Samus can get out of the way. He cannot angle his shot low enough to shoot her if he’s backed against one of the walls, so in those instances, standing beneath him in the corner is safe.
Sliding will easily evade his downward plummet, and Space Jumping will help Samus avoid his horizontal sweeps. Players should take every available opportunity to shoot Raven Beak with any weapon while paying attention to his attack movements.
Breaking Down the Fight Against Raven Beak: Stage Three
This stage is a reprise of the first, but with a few twists. Raven Beak will switch between releasing a golden and black orb. The golden orb will shoot energy beams at Samus once it rises to the top of the screen. Raven Beak continues to fire his beam cannon as introduced in stage two. He will also use his own Flash Shift and Speed Booster to ram into Samus.
Strategies to Defeat Raven Beak: Stage Three
Use the Power Bomb obtained from defeating E.M.M.I.-07PB in Hanubia to destroy the golden orb. The battle becomes unnecessarily difficult when having to contend with the orb on top of Raven Beak’s attacks. From there, simply evade and shoot at him when possible, and counter his attacks as in stage one. Eventually, the final scenario will trigger.
Breaking Down the Fight Against Raven Beak X: Final Stage
The final stage pits an over-powered Metroid Samus Aran, wearing a new suit, against a Raven Beak overcome by an X parasite. All players need to do is charge Samus’ Arm Cannon and fire. Raven Beak X will be destroyed after a sustained burst, and then the real ending sequence will initiate: Samus must flee ZDR, using her new weaponry to clear the way to her ship.
