Zoe Saldana is likely to reprise her role as Gamora as well, though this will be the 2014 version of the character that appeared in Endgame. The special will film alongside Vol. 3 and star the main cast in a crucial story that will factor into the third entry of the franchise while also introducing a new Marvel character to the MCU. Gunn has released a few developments in the pre-production of Vol. 3 on social media for months, which included his work storyboarding the movie as well as finishing the script. More recently, cast members like Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff revealed that they had not only read the completed script but that it brought both of them to tears.

“We read it in the same room together, and then looked at each other and we were in floods of tears,” Gillan revealed. The script promises to be an emotional story that dives into the established characters deeper than fans have seen before in the post-Thanos MCU.

6 Vol. 3 Will Feature Large Roles For Rocket, Nebula, & Mantis

The director also revealed that some of the Guardians will receive larger roles in Vol. 3, with a focus on characters like Rocket, whose unfinished storyline and mysterious origins serve as one of the main arcs of the franchise.

While fans are excited to learn more about Rocket, Gunn also teased both Gillan and Klementieff about their tears when reading the script, claiming it better not be due to lack of dialogue as both have much heavier roles than in previous installments.

5 Stakar & The Original Ravagers Are Likely To Appear

Original Guardians of the Galaxy Ravagers

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 introduced Yondu’s original crew of Ravagers led by Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar, who comic fans will recognize as members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy that formed in the future before Star-Lord formed his own team during the modern age.

Gunn had previously teased the original Ravagers return and involvement in Vol. 3 though it hasn’t been confirmed since he returned to the movie. However, his ongoing working relationship with Stallone (who starred as King Shark in The Suicide Squad) makes his return in Vol. 3 alongside the other Ravagers fairly likely.

While it wasn’t an official confirmation, Gunn is known for working with the same actors in multiple movies, as The Suicide Squad even featured long-time collaborators Michael Rooker (GotG‘s Yondu) as Savant alongside Nathan Fillion’s TDK, who also starred in a deleted scene from Vol. 2 as Simon Williams, the actor/superhero known as Wonder Man.

3 Vol. 3 Will Be Dave Bautista’s Final Appearance As Drax

Drax In Guardians Of The Galaxy

James Gunn isn’t the only crew member who will be calling it quits after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as Dave Bautista has revealed that the upcoming continuation will also be his final performance as Drax the Destroyer.

Batista has been vocal about Marvel Studios’ apparently moving on without him in the role of the character which began when he wasn’t asked to voice Drax for the animated What If…? series, though he also cites his age (54 when Vol. 3 hits theaters) as one of the reasons he doesn’t see himself moving on in the role after his last contracted appearance.

2 Will Poulter Has Been Cast As Vol. 3’s Adam Warlock

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 featured a dramatic post-credit scene that teased the creation of the powerful cosmic being known as Adam Warlock, as Ayesha from The Sovereign planted the seeds for her revenge against the Guardians.

Adam Warlock featured heavily in many of the comic events that were used for story material in the MCU, so his appearance has been rumored and anticipated for years. After the news of casting leaked online, Gunn announced that Will Poulter has been cast as Adam Warlock for Vol. 3, though he might make his MCU debut during the Holiday Special.

Star-Lord And His Family In Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2

While the original release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was slated for sometime in 2020, there have been a few pushbacks due to Gunn’s firing and rehiring as well as the ever-shifting slate due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The new confirmed release date for Vol. 3 will now see the movie hit theaters on May 5, 2023. This release date was not one of the many that were recently shifted by Marvel Studios, so fans can expect to see Vol. 3 sit on that date unless there are issues during production that further delay the final entry in the trilogy.
