In the latest episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Elton’s optimistic worldview takes a hit when he looses his TuffyStich corduroy getup.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2, Episode 3, “Exit Wounds,” which aired Sunday on AMC.
While the first two episodes in Season 2 of The Walking Dead: World Beyond have been kind of slow, they’re important because they’re all about setting things up for the rest of the series. “Konsekans” featured Iris and Felix finding the Perimeter community while the CRM put Hope through a test. Then, in “Foothold,” Silas was taken to a CRM decontamination facility; Colonel Kublek hunted for Iris, Felix and Will, and Hope was introduced to her dad’s research. Now, in “Exit Wounds,” Elton and Percy are seen for the first time in Season 2, and their conflicting worldviews are the topic of discussion.
The last time that fans saw the two of them, Silas allowed himself to be captured by the CRM so that they could escape. Since then, they have been looking for the rest of their group but to no avail. This week, they are first seen on horseback, and they haven’t eaten in days. So, when they see two people in a camp, they immediately want to get help but in very different ways.
Percy’s worldview is very simple. He tells Elton three times during the episode that “the world’s a shitshow. You either accept it or you die.” It makes sense that he has that attitude after being in the wild for so long and seeing Huck kill his uncle. So, when he sees the people in the camp, he immediately wants to con them out of their food.
Elton, on the other hand, wants to be nice and ask for help. He insists that not everyone is bad and that people, in general, are good. So, Percy pretends to give in, but while Elton is talking to them, Percy sneaks in from the back and gets caught stealing. A chase ensues, but they are waylaid by walkers who are almost grown into the ground.
The two campers, who Elton and Percy just finished robbing, end up saving them, but in the process, Elton is bitten by a walker. The campers jump into action, ready to cut his arm off, but he begs them to wait, claiming that his TuffyStich corduroy jacket is durable enough to stop a walker bite. Sure enough, he is right; his jacket did save his life, but then the camper took the suit as her own. Then, after some cloak and dagger, the campers take Elton and Percy back to the Perimeter where they reunite with Iris and Felix.
The event is significant in Elton’s development as a character. First, he literally lost his TuffyStich. It’s almost “like cloth armor,” and it saved his life. However, Elton loses a lot more than that in the episode. His corduroy getup represents his shield from the world, according to showrunner Matt Negrete’s episode insider clip. It allows him to compartmentalize and shield himself from the difficulties around him. Without that metaphorical, emotional armor, he isn’t prepared for what he learns at the Perimeter.
When he gets there, he learns that the CRM has Hope and that the Campus Colony has been destroyed, along with everyone in it. His optimistic worldview from earlier in the episode is crushed all at once. For him, it’s starting to look like Percy’s opinion that the “world’s a shitshow” might be more accurate than he wants to admit. So, adjusting to reality and the difficulties around him looks to be a big storyline for him going forward, and he might have to do that without his armor, at least for a while.
To see how Elton fares without his armor, tune into The Walking Dead: World Beyond. The series airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and is available to stream early on AMC+.
