As the only two Star Wars characters to defeat Emperor Palpatine, a fight between Darth Vader and Rey Skywalker would be worth watching.
Darth Vader and Rey Skywalker have both accomplished something that most Star Wars characters have never come close to doing: defeating Darth Sidious. Despite thinking that neither posed a threat to his unlimited power, they both proved the Emperor wrong and ended his tyranny. Since they were the only two characters to do so, the question naturally arises of who would win in an all-out battle between the original Dark Lord and the newest addition to the Skywalker heritage.
Does Rey Have More Raw Power Than Darth Vader?
Darth Vader was once Anakin Skywalker – Star Wars‘ Chosen One. Freed from Tatooine by Qui-Gon Jinn, the young boy had more midichlorians than any other Jedi. That means that he had more potential in the Force than anyone else on record. As he grew, he capitalized on his potential and became the Republic’s poster boy during the Clone Wars. However, tragedy struck as he fell into darkness and became Darth Vader. When Anakin was defeated by Obi-Wan on Mustafar, he lost three limbs. That means that he lost all of the midi-chlorians that lived within his severed limbs, which, lessened his potential in the Force. George Lucas has said that Vader operated at roughly 20 percent less strength than his master, whereas Anakin was twice as strong as Palpatine.
On the other hand, Rey Skywalker comes from power. She is the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, albeit through a cloning process that may have given her real Skywalker blood. That, however, does not diminish her potential. Without any training, she defeated Kylo Ren at Starkiller Base. She also lifted countless large rocks to free the Resistance fighters on Crait and summoned Force lighting without even knowing that she could. Although her midi-chlorian count is never mentioned, it is clear that Rey’s potential is vast. While Vader has peaked in his Force-prowess, Rey is only getting started. Even if Vader is currently more skilled, Rey definitely has more raw power.
Vader vs. Rey: Who Is Better With a Lightsaber?
Anakin Skywalker was one of the best duelists in Star Wars due to the experience he gained during the Clone Wars. He used Form V Djem So, which was known for its solid defense that was paired with powerful counterattacks. When he became Darth Vader, he had to adapt his style to account for his new physical limitations. To do so, he incorporated parts of Form II Makashi to better utilize leverage and precision strikes, along with parts of Form III Soresu to better defend his crucial breastplate. The variety of forms means that Vader was a very well-rounded and exceptional duelist, regardless of his limiting armor.
When Rey fights with a lightsaber, it can sometimes be hard to watch. The reason for that is her lack of technical experience with a blade, so she fights without a true style, letting her street instincts take over. The result is probably closest to Form I, Shi-Cho, which is characterized by sweeping strikes that are heavy, random and unplanned. That can be effective when fighting multiple enemies, like the form was intended to do, but when fighting against a single opponent, it’s kind of like bringing a broad sword to a fencing match. It also explains why it looks like her lightsaber is so much heavier than when others fight. While Rey’s Force-potential is great, her dueling abilities don’t really measure up, giving Vader the edge in this category.
Battle of the Skywalkers: Who Would Win in a Fight?
While lightsaber form can help in a duel, it’s not everything. In reality, fights between Force-users are much more involved than people realize. Winning a fight means breaking through an opponent’s defenses with a lightsaber or other physical attack, but there is more than that. Force-wielders have an inherent defense in the Force that lets them know when and where attacks are coming. Being proficient with a blade means nothing if an opponent’s superior Force powers allow them to mask their attacks or move faster than their foe can defend. So, a fight between Rey and Vader could be interesting because of Rey’s potential to connect to the Force.
The winner, though, would almost definitely be Vader. The difference between winning and losing a fight is miniscule. Split decisions and fateful moments decide everything, and the only way to know when and how to strike is experience. While Vader’s potential in the Force may not be the same as Rey’s, his experience, not only as a duelist but as a combatant, far outweighs Rey’s. Simply put, Vader has a knack for winning fights and proving his dominance throughout Star Wars. After all, he was a Jedi hunter. He lived to fight, and a battle with Rey would likely end with her quick demise.
