Ant-Man 3’s Evangeline Lilly Says She ‘Finally’ Understands Hope van Dyne

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Evangeline Lilly admits that, after working on four MCU films, she finally understands Hope Van Dyne.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Evangeline Lilly recently shared it took reading the script for the third Ant-Man film for her to finally understand her character, Hope Van Dyne.

“We’re just a little over halfway through. And I will say that after I read the script of the film, I did have a kind of eureka moment,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “I said to [director Peyton Reed], ‘Oh my God, I think I finally get her.’ Three or four films in, I thought, ‘I think I get it now.'”

Lilly added that, by the time she wraps the film, she hopes she can see her better understanding of the character playout onscreen.

“But I don’t think anyone else will. I think I’m a good bluffer. That’s what I do for a living,” she said. “But I know the difference and I’m hopeful that in this one, I’ll feel like I can watch it and go, ‘Yeah, you had a better handle on her in this one than you ever have before.’ That’s my goal, anyway. That’s my hope.”

Lilly made her debut as van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, in 2015’s Ant-Man. She reprised the role in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, in which she took over the mantle of The Wasp from her mother (Michelle Pfeiffer). Lilly returned as the character in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

The actor last shared an update with fans about Quantumania back in May, when she posted a video detailing her MCU workout routine. The video showed Lilly working out at the beach and included the caption, “I have spent a good part of the past two years in bed struggling through a very serious physical breakdown. Now I need to rebuild my strength in order to be able to bring the Wasp back to life again.”

In other Quantumania-related news, Paul Rudd recently said that he was blown away by Jonathan Majors’ portrayal of Kang the Conquerer in the upcoming film. “I’ve loved everything he’s done, and I see what he’s doing in this, and I’m knocked out by it,” the actor, who portrays Scott Lang/Ant-Man, said at the time. “It is really fun to bring new people into the fold, and the enthusiasm that people have is palpable.”

Directed by Peyton Reed, Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne, Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang and Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. The film arrives in theaters on Feb. 17, 2023.
