Lois & Clark’s Dean Cain Says Making Jon Kent Bi Is ‘Bandwagoning’

The former 1990s Superman actor appeared on Fox News to criticize the news of Jon Kent, the current Superman of Earth, coming out as bisexual

Former Superman actor Dean Cain continues to be the go-to celebrity that Fox News brings in to denounce whatever new thing is happening in comic books that week, as the actor was asked about his reaction to the news that Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s son, Jon Kent, the current Superman of Earth, will be coming out as bisexual in a comic book next month. He was not enthused.

Cain noted on Fox & Friends, “They said it’s a bold new direction, I say they’re bandwagoning. Robin just came out as bi — who’s really shocked about that one? The new Captain America is gay. My daughter in [The CW series] Supergirl, where I played the father, was gay. So I don’t think it’s bold or brave or some crazy new direction. If they had done this 20 years ago, perhaps that would be bold or brave.”

The 55-year-old actor, who starred as Clark Kent/Superman on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman for four seasons from 1993-1997, then offered up what kind of comic book plots he would term “brave,” explaining, “Brave would be having him fighting for the rights of gay people in Iran where they’ll throw you off a building for the offense of being gay.”

Cain, who does not read Superman: Son of Kal-El and obviously hasn’t read the issue where Jon Kent comes out (as it will not be released until next month), still had plenty of opinions about the plot of the comic book that he does not read, adding, “They’re talking about having him fight climate change and the deportation of refugees, and he’s dating a hacktivist — whatever a hactivist is. Why don’t they have him fight the injustices that created the refugees whose deportation he’s protesting?”

Cain, who gives reactions to plots of comic books that he does not read as explained to him by other people, continued, “That would be brave, I’d read that. Or fighting for the rights of women to attend school and have the ability to work and live and boys not to be raped by men under the new warm and fuzzy Taliban — that would be brave. There’s real evil in this world today, real corruption and government overreach, plenty of things to fight against. Human trafficking — real and actual slavery going on. … It’d be great to tackle those issues.”

Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, by Tom Taylor, John Timms, Gabe Eltaeb and Dave Sharpe, goes on sale Nov. 9 from DC.
