The world of anime has an astonishing variety of characters, some of which are perfect for a spooky Halloween binge, especially with the horror of supernatural series like Another or Soul Eater. Such anime feature characters such as zombies, vampires, restless spirits, and of course, black cats.
Many anime series have cat characters in them, either full-blown catgirls or just regular housecats. Either way, a black cat is a perfect mascot for the chilling Halloween season. Some of these black cats are minor side characters or just pets, while others play a surprisingly substantial role in the series. Some of them can even talk or use magic powers. Who are these Halloween felines?
10 Bleach Introduced Yoruichi Shihoin In Cat Form
Bleach‘s first season was a whimsical and eccentric era in the series, and that included introducing a talking black cat named Yoruichi. By now, Ichigo and his friends were used to weird things such as Hollows and even a talking parakeet, so a talking black cat actually wasn’t too weird in their eyes.
This, however, was just a disguise. In reality, Yoruichi Shihoin is a grown woman and a former Soul Reaper, complete with incredible martial arts skills and in-depth knowledge of the Soul Society. Even in human form, though, Yoruichi has a few subtle feline traits.
9 Kiki’s Delivery Service Includes Jiji The Talking Cat
Studio Ghibli has produced many beloved anime movies for decades now, and one of them is the 1989 fantasy series Kiki’s Delivery Service, featuring a girl who wants to become a flying witch and help people. Not only does this girl have a broom and a good heart, but she also has a black cat as her familiar, Jiji.
Many anime witches have a black cat by their side, and Jiji, in particular, has a somewhat snarky personality in the English dub, but he means well. He eventually meets a female white cat named Lily, and they have kittens together.
8 Soul Eater Features Blair The Black Cat Girl
Yoruichi Shihoin isn’t the only anime character who can swap back and forth between a cat and human form. Early in the Soul Eater anime, heroine Maka Albarn ran afoul of Blair, an intelligent black cat who could morph into a human form, resembling an adolescent girl in a witch getup.
Despite her appearance, though, Blair wasn’t actually a witch, and Soul Eater Evans was shocked when he ate her soul and realized that he’d made a big mistake. He had meant to eat a witch soul, and now he had to go and find a real one this time.
7 Nichijou Features Sakamoto The Talking Cat
Nichijou is an eccentric and wacky anime series set in high school, and it should appeal greatly to fans of Azumanga Daioh!. Both series feature lovable cats, but only Nichijou has a black cat suitable for Halloween. In fact, Sakamoto can talk.
So long as Sakamoto wears that red bandana, he can talk like a person, and he has a strong personality to match. He tends to gently fuss at the young Professor, almost acting like an exasperated big brother or father to her. Professor rarely listens, though.
6 Konosuba Makes Time For Chomusuke The Familiar
Konosuba features a “cute witch” sort of character, Megumin the explosion enthusiast. She has a magical staff, a witch hat, and the noble goal to become the world’s #1 explosion master, but she still makes time for her friends, including her very own familiar, Chomusuke.
Aside from the red mark on her forehead and her tiny wings, Chomusuke is a fairly ordinary cat, and she doesn’t do much in combat. In fact, she’s better off staying away from the action during a misadventure. She wouldn’t want giant frog slime getting into her fur.
5 Code Geass Includes The Stray Cat Arthur
Code Geass is an exciting and intricate sci-fi action series starring Lelouch vi Britannia and his allies, and at times, Lelouch is more like a chilling antihero. But the story does soften its tone a bit with lovable characters like Arthur, a stray black cat.
Arthur doesn’t have any powers like Blair or Sakamoto. He is an ordinary cat whom Euphemia found, and he eventually joined the student council as a mascot of sorts. He is often seen with Suzaku and might bite him sometimes.
4 Sailor Moon Features Luna The Helpful Cat
Luna is a magical black cat who can talk, and she’s lived on the moon with fellow cat Artemis for a time. Now, Luna spends her time aiding Usagi Tsukino and the other major characters in any way she can, though she’d rather not let other people know that she can speak. She’d like to pass herself off as an ordinary feline.
In particular, Luna helped Usagi awaken the other Sailors, including Ami, Rei, and Makoto. It was also Luna who gave Ami a supercomputer to use, and she could also help everyone find the Dark Kingdom. That’s one helpful cat.
3 Chi’s Sweet Home Includes A Big Black Cat
Chi’s Sweet Home makes for some easy viewing, being a charming and easygoing series starring a curious kitten named Chi. One fortunate day, Chi was adopted into the Yamada family in secret, and she befriended not just her new owners, but also other cats who live in the neighborhood, including strays.
Chi meets a large black cat she nicknames Kuroiro, and Kuroiro is a slightly grumpy but well-meaning elder cat who gruffly gives Chi some advice and pointers on the do’s and don’t’s of modern cat life. Chi is always happy to meet up with her mentor and ask him for a little advice.
2 Trigun Has A Black Cat Who Pops Up In Each Episode
For the most part, Trigun is remembered for its stylish sci-fi Wild West setting on the desert world of Gunsmoke, and it’s not easy for gunslingers to make a living here, but they try. Vash the Stampede and his friends are here for adventure, and a certain black cat likes to tag along.
That black cat, known as Kuroneko, or literally “black cat,” manages to show up in each episode, often to provide comic relief as a running gag. Sometimes, Kuroneko will jump into a comic relief scene and make it even funnier.
1 Fairy Tail Has A Black Feline Warrior Named Panther Lily
In the world of Fairy Tail, cats are much more than pets. Exceeds are winged cats with human intelligence, and in their homeland of Edolas, they are seen as divine beings. Happy the blue cat is one of them, as is Carla and their warrior friend, Panther Lily.
Panther Lily has a much larger and more humanoid form, and in that form, he can fight as a swordsman and overwhelm most human foes with ease. He is also the cat partner of Gajeel Redfox the iron dragon slayer, and Gajeel is thrilled to have him around. He had always wanted his own cat, after all.
