Honey Badger sports a new look — and a new undead-killing occupation — as she fights alongside her sister in the pages of Dark Ages #2.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Dark Ages #2, on sale now.
Gabrielle Kinney, also known as Honey Badger or Scout, receives her very own Wolverine-style costume in the pages of Dark Ages #2.
The issue sees Gabby and her older sister Laura Kinney serving on an elite strike team alongside Blade and Elsa Bloodstone. Laura wears a revised version of her standard Wolverine outfit, with tactical shoulder pads and thigh straps, but the more notable changes come with Gabby’s gear. The younger clone wears a blue and yellow costume and a full headpiece reminiscent of Laura’s, and the side pieces of her red goggles now extend beyond her head in points that resemble Wolverine’s trademark ears. Her claws also appear to be “stake fists” designed to instantly kill bloodsuckers.
In their new duds, Gabby and Laura patrol the wilds around the walled cities that have sprung up in Dark Ages’ post-apocalyptic timeline. In a world without electricity, these regions have become infested with hordes of werewolves and vampires — several of whom loyally serve Dracula, who makes an appearance later in the issue.
Dark Ages #2 picks up seven years after the events of Issue #1, which saw the Earth irrevocably changed by the Unmaker. A living machine that attempted to break free from its prison beneath the surface of the planet, the Unmaker massacred several of Earth’s mightiest heroes, including Scarlet Witch and Ben Grimm. Its rampage only ended when Doctor Strange opened up a portal to another dimension without electricity. The portal remained open even after the Unmaker’s demise, sending out an electromagnetic pulse that plunged the world into darkness and disrupted most technology.
In the aftermath of the Unmaker’s rampage, humanity has managed to survive in a literal “dark age.” New threats have emerged, however — including a legion of former heroes loyally serving Apocalypse.
Gabrielle Kinney first appeared in 2015’s All-New Wolverine #2 as one of 10 clones created by the genetics research organization Alchemax. The alternate version of her appearing on Dark Ages‘ Earth-TRN891 is similar to her mainstream rendition in normal Marvel continuity, and Gabby and Laura were last seen in Dark Ages #1 assisting survivors from the destruction that occurred as the Unmaker bashed against its underground prison. It appears as if the two clones of Wolverine have survived into a new, less technologically advanced era — and found a unique undead-slaying outlet for their claws.
Written by Tom Taylor and penciled by Iban Coello, Dark Ages #2 is now on sale from Marvel Comics.
