In Deadpool: Invisible Touch #1, the Merc With a Mouth attempts to masquerade as one of Marvel’s worst villains…and things go terribly wrong.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Deadpool: Invisible Touch #1, available now on Marvel Unlimited.
Of all the villains in the Marvel Universe, Stilt-Man can be considered one of the worst. Since his first appearance in 1965’s Daredevil #8 (by Stan Lee, Wally Wood and Sam Rosen) the mad scientist Wilbur Day has used his hydraulic legs and powerful armor to fight heroes from great heights. However, despite his imposing stature, Day has yet to be particularly effective as a villain. Making things worse, Stilt-Man has his armor stolen from him by Wade Wilson in Deadpool: Invisible Touch #1 (by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck and Geoffo) when Wade uses the outfit as a disguise.
Deadpool beats up Stilt-Man and steals his outfit before disguising himself in the armor to attend an underground auction at the Louvre. Several villainous figures of the Marvel Universe have been invited to bid on a flash drive obtained from the Baxter Building that contains the intellectual property of the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards and Stark Industries. While the mercenary could almost certainly have his own uses for this type of sensitive data, Deadpool wants to get the hard drive and return it to its rightful owners so that he can get back in Captain America’s good graces.
While Deadpool’s disguise helps him avoid unwanted attention, the auction still manages to devolve into violent mayhem. Electro disrupts the proceedings and attempts to steal the data. Deadpool tackles him, but before either of them can get to the drive, The Spot arrives on the scene and tries to grab it for himself. An all-out brawl ensues, with Sue Storm showing up to claim the data as well . For a moment, it looks like Wade is in the perfect position to snatch the coveted device away from the numerous villains, but Stilt-Man’s armor is more of a hindrance than he expected. Electro shocks the armor which badly electrocutes Deadpool and gives the Spot an opportunity to escape with the drive.
It is surprising to see Deadpool do so poorly in a fight. His lengthy career as a mercenary and anti-hero has made him a master of most types of combat. While Electro and the Spot are better fighters than Stilt-Man, neither of them are likely to give Wade much trouble under normal circumstances. But the armor made him clumsy and gave his opponents the edge they needed.
Seeing the Merc with a Mouth struggle to utilize the armor places Stilt-Man in a slightly more favorable light. The misadventure of Deadpool signifies that it clearly takes a degree of skill to effectively utilize the armor, and Stilt-Man has used it to go toe-to-toe with some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Clearly, Day is more talented than he appears.
Over the years, Deadpool has tried on plenty of different outfits and disguises, and, he usually pulls them off pretty well. However, in the case of Stilt-Man’s armor, he has proven to be highly ineffective. By the end of the issue, Wade has shed his inconvenient disguise in favor of his own costume, which is certainly a good sign for his future performance, but his bruised pride is sure to sting for some time.
