Shang-Chi Healed a Father/Son’s Real-World Relationship

Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton says a 22-year-old fan who saw the movie with his father thanked him for healing their relationship.

Not only is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings a hit, topping $200 million at the box office, but its themes of family have also helped to heal real-life relationships.

Shang-Chi director/co-writer Destin Daniel Cretton and co-writer Dave Callaham spoke to Yahoo! Entertainment reporter Kevin Polowy about audience response to the film. Cretton said, “I have one favorite reaction that I saw of this: It was, like, a 22-year-old young man who posted a picture of him and his dad going to watch the movie, and he just said, ‘Thank you for healing my relationship with my father.'”

Cretton continued, “I don’t know what the specifics to that backstory are. But I have seen that there is the generation of parents who love Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh are able to be dragged to the theater by their kids, who typically would never be able to drag them to a Marvel movie. And it’s nice because it is, it’s a family movie about a family coming together, and it’s nice to see families going together to watch the movie.”

Callaham added, “I love those ones that Destin’s talking about, just people you don’t know that seem to be having very moving experiences with the movie. That’s, I think, ultimately the most rewarding.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu. The film is now in theaters.
