A Puzzle Box Dives Into the Clown Prince of Crime’s Musical Taste

[ad_1]

Joker inspects Two-Face’s record collection, offering a brief bit of musical critique in the pages of The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box #3.

An upcoming issue of The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box reveals an interesting factoid about Gotham’s deadliest clown — he can appreciate a good Frank Sinatra record.

A preview of the third print issue of The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box, which collects its previously released digital chapters with bonus material, shows Two-Face returning home from a tumultuous and violent trip in Russia. He spies Joker rummaging through his apartment and fiddling with his records, and the Clown Prince of Crime is quick to pull out Sinatra’s famous rendition of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” simultaneously praising Harvey’s taste and insulting the recording’s orchestra.

While it seems appropriate for a suave, former District Attorney like Harvey Dent to own a Sinatra record, Joker’s appreciation for the crooner might be more of a surprise. But Joker and Frank Sinatra share an unusual history. Not only did Sinatra coincidentally star in an unrelated 1957 film titled The Joker is Wild, but rumor has it the singer wanted to play the Joker on the 1966 Batman television show. Former Boy Wonder Burt Ward commented on the gossip in the 2008 book Truth and Rumors: The Reality Behind TV’s Most Famous Myths, pointing out that Caesar Romano had already signed onto the role, much to Sinatra’s disappointment.

“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” was also used on the soundtrack for the video game Batman: Arkham Knight, produced by Rocksteady Studios. The song is played during the game’s dramatic opening, as the Joker’s deceased body is burned in a furnace. The 2019 Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix as the killer clown also continued this connection, ending with “That’s Life,” the titular track from Sinatra’s 1966 album of the same name.

The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box by writer Matthew Rosenberg and artists Jesús Merino, Dominike “Domo” Stanton and Juni Ba takes place over the course of one night in a Gotham City Police Department interrogation room. The Joker tells a variety of different stories — several of which involve other villains — as Commissioner Gordon, Harvey Bullock and other officers of the G.C.P.D. attempt to piece together his unreliable narration in order to determine who killed the Riddler. Issue #3 features appearances from Two-Face, Catwoman, Killer-Moth and Man-Bat.

Originally released digitally on DC Universe Infinite in June, The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box began its print run in August. Issue #3 goes on sale Oct. 5 from DC.
