Venom 2 Teases the Symbiotes on a Cosmic Scale

[ad_1]

Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s final moment hints at a cosmic scope for future installments, which could lead to a major villain’s debut.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, now playing in theaters.

In most incarnations of the character, the Venom symbiote is but one of many members of its alien race, come to Earth through some accident and quickly spreading across the planet. Recent events in the comics have teased the full scope of their potential — and now, that might be where the Venom film series is headed as well.

While the post-credits sequence for Venom: Let There Be Carnage is largely defined by the multiversal ramifications it poses, there’s another cosmic tease in the scene that could hint towards the future of the Venom franchise — and the kind of threat that could appear down the line.

Venom Let The Be Carnage 1

The symbiote homeworld was a major factor in the first Venom, even if the world was never fully glimpsed. In that movie, the Life Foundation discovered four symbiotes on an asteroid in deep space. Bringing them back to Earth, two of them quickly died. The other two — eventually known as Venom and Riot — were able to successfully bond to hosts. Venom reveals the entire purpose of the symbiotes on the comet was to discover more worlds on which the symbiotes could spread. Although both were sent to Earth with this purpose, Venom — having genuinely connected with Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy)  — spared his life and helped him bring down Riot before it could return to space.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a far more Earth-bound affair, dealing primarily with Venom’s battle against its spawn Carnage after it bonds with the serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson). After defeating Carnage, Venom and Brock are forced to go on the run to avoid the authorities. However, while they have a brief moment of downtime in the post-credits sequence of the film, Venom offers to show Brock a fraction of the symbiote hive-mind. It claims that to expose him fully would likely destroy him, hinting at the sheer scope of the species. But before they can do it, both are seemingly shunted across realities and land in what appears to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

King in Black Knull 1

But while this takes a lot of the attention from the sequence, it’s worth noting that Venom’s intent to expose Eddie to the cosmic side of the symbiote could potentially carry a lot of ramifications. In the original Marvel Comics, the symbiotes are known as the Klyntar race and were recently retconned to be creations of Knull, a primordial god of darkness from the dawn of the current universe. Connected through a hive mind to their creator, the symbiotes spent untold centuries spreading Knull’s dark influence. But after a battle in the sixth century with a young Thor, Knull’s influence was weakened enough for the symbiotes to rebel and imprison him within the heart of the hive — which came to be known as the planet Klyntar.

Knull eventually stirred awake in the present day, with his crusade against the universe serving as the storyline of the 2020 crossover King in Black. If Venom were to try and show Eddie the hive mind, it could accidentally expose him to the influence of Knull — which in turn likely wouldn’t be good for the superhero bereft reality they hail from. The reality shift might have just saved Venom and their entire original reality a lot of trouble, but it still means that Venom could set off a cosmic symbiote event — and potentially allow future entries in the franchise to explore the full cosmic scope of the symbiote race.

To see Venom and Eddie narrowly escape this fate, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is now in theaters.
