World Beyond: Iris Takes Out a New Enemy

In the latest episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, a surprising character takes out her newest enemy.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2, Episode 1, “Konsekans,” which aired Sunday on AMC.

In The Walking Dead Season 1, Iris Bennett established herself as an optimistic, hopeful leader while on her journey to rescue her father, Leo Bennett, from the Civic Republic Military. However, the Walking Dead Universe prides itself on taking things dark, and that means good characters don’t often stay that way. And the latest episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond sees Iris heading down a dark path, as she murders a CRM soldier.

Early in “Konsekans,” the latest episode of World Beyond, Iris learns that CRM wiped out the Campus Colony while staying at the Perimeter, a populated area just outside of the military group’s base. As the Campus Colony was her home, Iris is understandably upset, and she’s worried about her sister, Hope, being with Leo at CRM’s compound.

This eventually results in Iris taking a crossbow and heading towards the CRM base. Outside, she finds a soldier on patrol. Soon, he hears her spying on him and starts approaching. But then they’re interrupted when a zombie approaches the soldier. Iris shoots the soldier with her crossbow and then hits him from behind. They fight, and she eventually stabs him in the chest, fatally wounding the man. “It wasn’t empties,” she tells him right before finishing the job. “It was you. That’s what you get.”

Killing the CRM soldier is definitely part of Iris acting out against the organization for having taken so much from her, but it also represents a potential change from which she might have trouble recovering. Earlier this year in an interview with CBR, actor Aliyah Royale, who plays Iris on World Beyond, said that the season was going to take her character to dark places — and the first episode has definitely already delivered on that. However, it sounds like things are going to get much darker for Iris as Season 2 progresses.

Later on down the line, this murder might also cause problems. Currently, Hope and Leo work for CRM, and the former seems to have started seeing the group’s point of view, which is definitely going to put the two sisters at odds. However, the knowledge that Iris murdered a man in cold blood and out of revenge could, in fact, result in their eventual meeting turning sour, as what she did is not particularly good. So while the long-term ramifications of this act aren’t clear right now, Iris may have just made the biggest choice of her life.

The first episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond is out now. Episode 2 releases Oct. 10.
