The Sony sequel pulled in a record-breaking box office opening that surpassed the previous film and even reached pre-pandemic levels.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage has set a new pandemic record at the domestic box office after pulling in $90.1 million during its opening weekend.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest film set in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) and the Spider-Man villain’s second solo film surpassed the original 2018 Venom, whose box office opening rested at $80.3 million. The film reached monetary levels experienced by films prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, even coming close to the Warner Bros.’ award-winning Joker (based on DC Comics), which pulled in $96.2 million during its opening and eventually rose to the world’s highest grossing R-rated movie with nearly $1.1 billion earned. While the lethal protector did not beat out the clown prince of crime, the sequel has taken the record for 2021’s highest-grossing three-day opening weekend, previously held by Marvel Studios’ Black Widow with $81 million.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is now available in theaters.
