James Gunn reveals why his upcoming Peacemaker series, which is set to premiere on HBO Max next year, lends itself to multiple seasons.
James Gunn explained why his upcoming Peacemaker series could easily get multiple seasons.
“At the end of The Suicide Squad, [Idris Elba’s] Bloodsport learns a lot. He’s a better person than he was at the beginning,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter. “A lot of the characters are much better than they were at the beginning, and Peacemaker has a lot to learn.”
The director further explained that Peacemaker’s ability to learn is what makes him a little bit more likable, even if he is a “bad guy.” “His blindspots in some places are pretty terrible, and in some places are him being ignorant,” Gunn continued. “I think that’s an important distinction to make as well. He is open at the same time, sometimes.”
Gunn’s comments about the series also build on his previous explanation about why Peacemaker was the right character to carry a spinoff series. At the time, he explained, “In the movie… Harley gets a really complete story about herself, she gets a complete arc. Bloodsport gets a complete story. Rick Flag gets a complete story. Ratcatcher 2 gets a complete story. They all learn something about themselves — sometimes good things, sometimes bad things — but Peacemaker is a douche and he stays a douche and he’s an asshole in the movie. But I think there’s something below that.”
HBO Max recently shared the first footage from the Suicide Squad spinoff series. Premiered during the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, the Peacemaker sizzle reel shows Cena as the anti-hero stepping out of a red, white and blue muscle car, which features a custom license plate that reads “PSS-MKR,” before meeting the rest of the cast at a restaurant. When Peacemaker is asked why he’s wearing his costume to dinner, he replies by explaining that it’s not a costume, it’s “a uniform.”
Peacemaker premieres in January 2022 on HBO Max.
