Actor Michelle Gomez, who will make her debut as Madame Rouge in Season 3 of Doom Patrol, thinks she was born to portray villainous characters.

Actor Michelle Gomez, who stars as Madame Rouge in the upcoming third season of DC’s Doom Patrol, revealed she was born to portray wicked characters.

“I think it’s just my face,” Gomez told Den of Geek in a new interview about Season 3 of Doom Patrol. “It’s hard to act out from under this particular set of features, so I’ve kind of leaned into that over the years. I have fun with it.”

The actor went on to explain that, when it comes to casting, her sharp features have proved to be an asset. “I’ve heard myself saying this many times in interviews before but it’s true,” she said. “I have a face that was born to play witches and bitches really until the day I die. Listen, if there’s a casting director out there who wants to cast me as Fiona or Alison the girl next door, I’m ready to play a decent, loving human being!”

Gomez also opened up about the challenges that come with playing bad, including her attempt to avoid the trap of being two-dimensional, adding, “I would hope it’s more complex than that.”

She continued, “Certainly for me as an actor I try to make the baddy as well rounded and as lovable as possible. But then I guess that that’s always the danger as well, you can’t really afford to let your guard down and get too close. But along the way, I’ve embraced it. I enjoy it because I get to be reliably bad in a good way. Unpredictable in that unpredictability. You can sort of unsettle the audience and there’s fun to be had there.”

Created by Arnold Drake, the Madame Rouge character debuted in 1964’s Doom Patrol #86. She’s best known as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil, along with The Brain and Monsieur Mallah, who will also be introduced in Season 3 of Doom Patrol. While Madame Rouge is a known shapeshifter, it was previously confirmed that she won’t remember her abilities when she’s first introduced to the HBO Max series.

Showrunner Jeremy Carver talked about Gomez joining the show back in August, saying at the time, “When I was talking to her about the part, I was trying to explain to her that in our eyes the Madame Rouge of Doom Patrol is much like the other characters in that you can’t quite pin them as good or bad.”

In addition to her role as the villainous Madame Rouge, Gomez previously portrayed Missy in Seasons 8-10 of BBC’s Doctor Who, Lillith/Madam Satan in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Miranda Croft in HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant.

Season 3 of Doom Patrol premieres Sept. 23 on HBO Max.
