While DC Comics may be known for their classic and iconic god-like superheroes like The Flash and Superman, they also have a variety of balanced, human-level heroes. These heroes were born from the Golden Age of comics, where most superheroes were actually a lot like regular folks, who had some kind of power, or weapon at their disposal. After realizing that the Man of Steel was difficult for audiences to relate to and root for, DC shifted its focus to some of their other characters for their future films. Now, the current generation of DCEU films is filled with delightful characters that are balanced and relatable.
This has worked to DC’s benefit as films like Aquaman, Suicide Squad, and Birds of Prey have connected with audiences much better than their previous entries in the franchise.
10 Aquaman Was A Breath Of Fresh Air For The DCEU
Aquaman was a breakout hit that no one expected. A character that is often overlooked by the general audience, Jason Mamoa’s portrayal of the hero split between the world of man and the world of Atlantis gave audiences a very different form of a superhero than earlier DC films.
Arthur’s powers focused mainly on enhanced physical strength and endurance, and the ability to psychically manipulate aquatic life. This lower-scale and more balanced loadout made the character much more enjoyable to watch and gave the story much more realistic stakes.
9 Wonder Woman Is One Of The Strongest Amazons Of All Time
Princess Diana of the Amazons made her appearance in the films Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, it wasn’t until her solo film, Wonder Woman, that viewers actually got to learn about her character. Diana’s supernatural origins are unique even for the mythical Amazons.
Not only is she physically enhanced, but she was also trained by the Amazonian warriors, making her an incredibly well-trained fighter. However, she has nowhere near the same invulnerability that someone like Superman would have. She uses her braces to block gunfire and, like all Amazons, likely can be killed by conventional means.
8 Batman Is Just A Guy With A Lot Of Money
Batman might just be the ultimate example of ‘punching above his weight.’ Unlike his Justice League allies, Bruce Wayne is completely human. He has no superpowers, or weapons that he uses besides those which he can build in his cave. Bruce made his legacy by always being the smartest guy in the room.
He rarely focuses on a direct conflict and builds strategies upon strategies to fight even cosmic-level threats like Steppenwolf. It is this human-level and his more realistic setting of Gotham that allows him to connect with so many fans.
7 It Is A Miracle That Harley Quinn Is Still Alive
Harley Quinn is probably one of the smartest non-meta human characters in the DCEU, because, despite the fact that she has no powers and/or immense fortune to support her endeavors, she has repeatedly managed to overcome enemies who should have killed her.
From world-eating old gods to mob bosses, Harley knows how to use her athleticism to its full extent, and how to outthink all her enemies. Though she may just be the Joker’s ex to most people, she’s far more dangerous than most people realize.
6 Bloodsport Is More Than Just An Assassin
Bloodsport is one of the most dangerous assassins seen in the DCEU so far. Not only is he an incredible marksman and hand-to-hand combatant, but his combat suit also allows him to carry a wide variety of weaponry in a specialized ‘collapsed’ form. He can pull swords, hammers, rifles, and even a minigun out in a moment’s notice and open fire. However, DuBois is not invincible.
Without his suit and weapons, he is still human. He is vulnerable to physical harm and even suffers from a fear of rats known as musophobia.
5 The Shazam Family members Share A Portion Of Billy’s Power
While Shazam himself may be a very powerful hero, it is his family that has the more interesting abilities. By using the staff of the wizard Shazam, Billy managed to share his powers with his adoptive siblings, granting each of them one of his powers. His younger sister, Darla, gained super-speed, his younger brother, Eugene, gained the power to control electricity, etc.
Each of the siblings gained one of Billy’s powers which they have shown to use effectively. Granting them only one ability allows them to be not as overpowered as their champion sibling.
4 Cheetah Was A Perfect Mirror To Wonder Woman
Cheetah was one of the prime antagonists of the second Wonder Woman film. Her enhanced speed and agility made her a perfect counter to Diana’s abilities. However, she was not invulnerable and didn’t show any form of enhanced durability.
Though she was only present for a short time, Cheetah was a villain that both presented a challenge, but also mirrored the hero in terms of scale and powers. Compared to the first film’s main antagonist, Aries, the God of War, Cheetah is a far more balanced and enjoyable approach.
3 Black Canary Made An Explosive Entry To The Franchise
Black Canary made her appearance in Birds of Prey alongside well-known DC characters such as Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Renee Montoya. Canary first displays herself as an extremely confident fighter, dispatching a group of hardened thugs with only minimal assistance from Harley. Alongside her fighting skills, the film also shows the full scale of her famous Canary Cry, a supersonic scream that staggers the strongest of villains.
The film brings her power to a whole new scale as it almost completely neutralizes a massive group of Black Mask’s mobsters; however, afterward, she passes out from the extreme effort.
2 Cyborg Is A Living Supercomputer
What makes Cyborg a balanced character is that he doesn’t fully understand the true scale of his abilities. Currently, he holds an incredibly powerful supercomputer inside his body that is capable of seemingly limitless adaptation, granting him flight abilities and access to any and all encoded files across the planet, he could even break into Bruce’s Batcomputer.
However, throughout the course of the Justice League film, he isn’t anywhere near powerful enough to fight Steppenwolf and is more focused on disrupting the Motherbox connection and battling the far weaker Parademons.
1 Black Manta Is Revenge’s Incarnate
Black Manta just really wanted to kill Aquaman. He isn’t some alien threat who conquers worlds like a Superman villain, or a magical demon that feeds on human souls like the Deadly Sins. Aquaman caused the death of his father and he sought revenge.
He was smart enough to develop a powerful exoskeleton that allowed him to battle Atlanteans underwater but also challenge Aquaman himself in a contest of strength. Manta’s straightforward and deadest mentality of killing Aquaman made him one of the most dangerous villains of recent films.
