Lil Nas X Homages Fate’s Gilgamesh With Met Gala Outfit

Lil Nas X has seemingly confirmed that his eye-catching Met Gala outfit was in fact a reference to the Fate franchise’s Gilgamesh.

Lil Nas X wore a gold-plated suit of armor to the 2021 Met Gala, and in a recent tweet, the Montero rapper seemingly confirms that the outfit was a deliberate homage to the Fate franchise’s arrogant king, Gilgamesh.

The multi-layered outfit was crafted specifically for Lil Nas X by Versace designers in Milan, Italy. Versace and the Grammy-award winning artist previously collaborated for the rapper’s iconic pink cowboy outfit, which he wore while he was promoting his original hit single, “Old Town Road” in 2019. The ensemble was designed to be revealed in three stages: the first is a flowing gold cape, which was removed on the Gala’s famous stairs to reveal the polished suit of armor underneath. The armor was then removed to showcase a golden sequin body suit underneath. When asked how the outfit made him feel, Lil Nas X responded “It feels how it looks — Amazing.”

The musician later tweeted out a series of images that seemingly confirm that the middle-stage of the outfit – the full suit of armor – was a reference to the character of Gilgamesh, the gold-clad king of Babylon who has appeared in multiple entries throughout TYPE-MOON’s Fate franchise of games and anime series.

Gilgamesh first appeared as an antagonist in the original Fate Stay/Night, where he was summoned by Tokiomi Tohsaka as an Archer class servant and quickly dominated the series’ Holy Grail War. In the series, Gilgamesh is the king of heroes from which all other heroic legends are derived from, so his Noble Phantasm, The Gate of Babylon, gives him access to all other servants’ powers and weapons. Gilgamesh also played in a role in the events of Fate Zero and Fate Grand/Order. The character’s arrogant attitude, over-powered abilities and stylish appearance have made him one of the more popular characters to emerge out of the Fate franchise, especially with the series’ many female fans.

This is not the first time that one of Lil Nas X’s outfits has drawn comparisons to a popular anime character. The rapper previously acknowledged that he knows everyone thinks he dresses like a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure character, and he previously wore an outfit to the BET Awards that had very clear references to one of Naruto’s primary antagonists on it.
