Defenders Upgraded Marvel’s First Villain With a Cosmic Power Boost

[ad_1]

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Defenders #1, available now from Marvel.

Doctor Strange and the latest incarnation of the Defenders have been brought together to go on a journey through time and space. After the Masked Raider has already told Doctor Strange about the threat posed by mad scientist Carlo Zota, those two and several other Defenders were summoned for a time-crossing, universe-hoping adventure to track Zota down.

And in Defenders #2, by Al Ewing, Javier Rodriguez, Jay Bowen, VC’s Cory Petit, and VC’s Joe Caramagna least, not until they come face to face with their foe in the beyond ancient past where Carlo Zota has been given his very own taste of the Power Cosmic.

Defenders Carlo Zorta Herald

Most of the heroes comprising this latest team of Defenders were already unwitting participants in the Masked Raider’s mission when Doctor Strange summoned them to help in the hunt for Carlo Zota. Although the villain was officially introduced in 1967’s Fantastic Four #66 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, when he was in the process of building the body that would eventually become Adam Warlock, he was later said to have been present for the original Human Torch’s creation in 1939’s Marvel Comics #1. Most recently, Zota’s work led to the reemergence of the now godlike Korvac, and in an effort to correct his grievous errors Zota used magic to send himself hurtling back in time.

As the titular team has just discovered in Defenders #2, the mad scientist ended up all the way back in the Sixth Cosmos, the reality which existed before the modern incarnations of the Marvel Multiverse. When the Defenders show up, the planet Taa, the birthplace of Galactus, finds itself under siege from another Devourer of Worlds known as Omnimax. Much like Galactus, Omnimax has chosen a herald of its own to imbue with the Power Cosmic, and that herald just so happens to be Zorta, someone who is more used to bestowing power upon his creations than wielding it himself.

Defenders Carlo Zorta Herald Cosmic

With powerful wings and jagged claws at the ready, Zota heads straight for the heroes, intent on turning the Power Cosmic he has been granted on this team of Defenders who have hunted him across realities. Zota’s new form is so strong that even the Silver Surfer has to admit that he is outmatched as the two come to blows. The energy flowing through him is like nothing that Zota has ever felt before, but it is everything he has ever wanted, and he still wants more. It is by exploiting that unhinged lust for power that the Surfer is able to ultimately defeat his foe, after baiting Zota into making a connection between them that could be turned on him. It isn’t a particularly glorious victory for hero, especially as he watches Zota pulled through time once more, though it does serve as an important reminder of how far this classic villain is willing to go in order to get what he wants.

Across his long history in the Marvel Universe, Carlo Zota has never hesitated to manipulate or even sacrifice those around him if it meant furthering his own goals. Considering those goals have almost always been malevolent, nothing good could have come from him having the Power Cosmic. Thankfully, the heroes seemed to have fate on their side, as the Surfer neutralized this threat and the other heroes followed Zorta into another incarnation of the Marvel Universe.
