Why Shang-Chi’s [SPOILER] Appeared So Early in the Film

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer reveals that a certain pivotal scene was not always intended to occur as early in the film as it did.

Since hitting theaters over Labor Day weekend, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has managed to break records at the box office while garnering plenty of praise among moviegoers. The twenty-fifth entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi has been credited by some with having the best action sequences thus far.

One scene, in particular, manages to serve as an action showcase for the film, and it takes place early on — the bus fight scene. In a new interview with THR, screenwriter Dave Callaham revealed that particular scene was not always meant to take place at that point int he movie. “It wasn’t always that early,” he explained. “You play around a lot in the writing, in the shooting and especially the editing.”

“That scene was always designed to be early, but there are flashbacks and backstory all throughout the movie,” Callaham said. “Those sequences, it was always, ‘Would it work better here? Can we move it over there? When do we reveal this?’ In terms of why that sequence is where it is, that sequence serves as an introduction to this hidden character.”

As fans will note, the scene serves as a way to introduce Katy (Awkwafina) to Shaun’s true identity and abilities. Up until that point, he had simply been a co-worker at the valet with whom she had become close and enjoyed karaoke sessions with, not a skilled fighter on the run from his father. “We knew there had to be an incredible impact for the moment of reveal,” Callaham explained. “You just need to be there with her watching as this guy she has always thought of as a guy who would never lift a finger is suddenly a kung-fu master.”

The fight scene evidently was expanded upon, too, once Callaham and director Destin Cretton looked at photos of buses in San Francisco. Once they learned the buses had accordions in them, they knew they could make the scene even bigger. “Now there is a whole second half to the fight, because now we can cut the thing off.”

Directed by Destin Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu and is in theaters now.
