Fans have been analyzing the Marvel’s Wolverine trailer and by piecing together several details, the teaser may suggest the game is a period piece.
After the reveal trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine sent shockwaves through the gaming world at the PlayStation Showcase, fans of the clawed mutant have, of course, been studying the footage for as many clues as possible. Though the teaser isn’t even a minute long, those who have put the trailer under a microscope have a theory about the game’s setting. More precisely, it’s timing.
Surprising many with its presence at the PlayStation Showcase, very little has been officially confirmed about Insomniac Games’ take on the world of Wolverine. But, that hasn’t stopped gamers from pouring over the footage and trying to piece together potential hints that the developer has left scattered through the reveal. Taking into account a few pieces of information from the trailer, some fans have started to speculate that Marvel’s Wolverine could be a period piece taking place in the 1970s.
The first clue that fans have latched onto is the cash register sitting atop the bar in front of Logan as he takes a breather from wrecking shop. The sale price listed on the machine reads “19.74,” particularly odd given how prominently it sits in the frame in bright green numbers just left of our protagonist. As such, some have taken this as a hint that rather than a simple piece of scenery, 1974 is the year in which Marvel’s Wolverine is set.
The theory has more legs to it than just a number, however. When taking in the trailer as a whole, there is nothing distinctly modern about any of the scenery or environment. In fact, that very cash register might be the most advanced technology in the scene. Plus, the track playing over the footage is also of a similar period. The song in question, The Dark End Of The Street by James Carr, was released in 1967, putting it in the same ballpark as the 1974 estimate.
With Insomniac Games’ wildly successful Marvel’s Spider-Man games, including the recently revealed sequel starring both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, all taking place in a modern-day, this period setting would mark quite a shift in their storytelling. But, with Wolverine’s mutant healing factor drastically slowing his aging process, it doesn’t rule out a possible cross-over in the future. Plus, it is already established that Parker and Morales aren’t the only heroes in their universe, with Avengers Tower a point of interest in the first game’s open world.
A potential 1970s setting does bring some interesting potential story beats for Marvel’s Wolverine. For example, several incarnations of Logan’s history have him serving in the military. Perhaps this version of the mutant has just recently seen combat in Vietnam? Could that also play into why Wolverine already has his skeleton infused with Adamantium? Beyond that, what of Wolverine’s extended universe? The year 1974 is a very interesting potential setting, especially considering that a Giant Sized X-Men #1 featuring Wolverine’s debut in the team’s second class hit shelves in 1975. With so little known about what exactly Insomniac Games has in store for Wolverine, fans are sure to be keeping their ears to the ground for any new information.
