Carnage’s bloody campaign has just dragged in his own offspring, but he just learned why his offspring Toxin is more powerful than he will ever be,
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Toxin, available now from Marvel Comics.
Extreme Carnage has seen the titular villain claw his way up from the darkest depths all the way to one of the highest seats of power in the United States; government. Though his scheme has been a slow burn, the horror has been moving at a blistering pace thanks to Carnage’s growing personal symbiote army. Like so many others before him, Toxin has just become the latest symbiote to hear Carnage’s murderous siren call. Unlike the rest, however, Toxin has actually managed to turn away from it, proving that at least in this instance the apple can fall pretty far from the tree.
Young Bren Waters, the current host of the Toxin symbiote, is still coming to terms with the prevailing anti-alien sentiment. Unfortunately, the fact that his father is counted among Alchemax’s numbers doesn’t do anything to quell his concerns. As he rides his bike, he and the symbiote discuss their relationship as well as Toxin’s with the world at large right now. Bren continues his inner monologue directed towards his symbiote partner but gets no response back. As it turns out, Toxin isn’t there anymore. Instead, he has been dragged deep into an unfamiliar Void by an all too familiar sound.
In the Void, Toxin finds the remains of those who Carnage used to bring the Life Foundation symbiotes back into his murderous fold. As surprised as Carnage is to see that his spawn was alive, Toxin is equally shocked that his father made it back to the land of the living after being torn to shreds by Eddie Brock. Carnage makes it clear that he isn’t worried about anything Eddie is up to, though he is worried about the way Toxin has been eschewing the bloody legacy that he inherited. As far as Carnage is concerned, his offspring’s time has been wasted on sympathetic hosts who have made him weak.
As seen in Extreme Carnage: Toxin by Steve Orlando, Gerardo Sandoval, Danilo S. Beyruth, Victor Nava, Chris Sotomayor and VC’s Cory Petit, that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it is the bonds that Toxin has made with his human hosts that have made him strong enough to stave off Carnage’s onslaught, saving both his own body as well as Bren’s life. For a symbiote like Carnage, it’s understandable that any loving, meaningful relationship would be a sign of frailty. If he had ever tried to bond with his offspring rather than attempting to kill Toxin from the moment of his birth, he might even know that for himself.
Throughout his entire history, Toxin has been beaten down and battered at almost every turn, but never by his hosts. Patrick Mulligan instilled in Toxin a sense of duty and a moral code that he has almost never wavered from, and Eddie Brock reinforced his sense of purpose. Now that he has bonded to Bren, he has found a new lease on his own life. He’s also found the key to becoming the impossibly powerful symbiote he was always meant to be.
