Spider-Man May Lift Thor’s Hammer Mjolnir in Phase 4

[ad_1]

The MCU’s Phase 4 promises the potential return of Thor’s legendary hammer, meaning a certain hero might get the chance to prove his worth.

Avengers: Endgame featured Marvel Cinematic Universe moments fans had been waiting years for, including Captain America proving himself worthy of wielding Mjølnir. With Jane Foster set to become the Goddess of Thunder in Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s safe to assume the mighty hammer will make a return in some fashion, whether it’s a recreated version or another blast from the past. With the return of Mjølnir comes the question of who is worthy enough to wield the magical weapon.

Phase Four might give another hero the chance to pick up Mjølnir as he steps into the shoes of Iron Man and Captain America. The MCU’s version of Peter Parker has often found himself learning from already established heroes like Iron Man and Nick Fury. One way he may step out of his mentors’ shadows is by wielding Mjølnir in an epic fashion similar to Captain America. The MCU version of Peter boasts the compassion and bravery of Steve Rogers with the intelligence and drive of Tony Stark. Seeing as Captain America was worthy of the MCU’s Mjølnir, it stands to reason that an older, more mature Spider-Man that sticks to his principles should be able to wield the hammer.

So far in the comics, however, he’s never been shown picking up the mighty hammer of Thor. An out-of-continuity story in Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man #40 showed the Web-Slinger wielding a copy of Mjølnir, but one without the worthiness enchantment and far less powerful than the original. The Spider-Man of the year 2099 named Miguel O’Hara wielded Mjølnir after it was gifted to him by a revived Captain America. Though Miguel gained no superhuman powers from the hammer, it gifted him immortality and allowed him to lead humanity into a new age of enlightenment. Of course, Miguel is a very different person than Peter Parker, meaning him wielding the hammer doesn’t necessarily mean the original Spider-Man can.

Several fan forums online believe Spider-Man cannot wield Mjølnir due to him refusing to kill. Thor and Captain America have each killed enemies in the wars they’ve fought in, never hesitating to take a life if they deemed it necessary for the greater good. The comics version of Spider-Man carries his aversion to killing throughout his entire career, though the MCU version may not share this sentiment as intensely.

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame both featured Peter killing or assisting in killing members of Thanos’ army. He came up with the plan to blow Ebony Maw into space even though it was Iron Man who actually blew a hole in the spaceship. Given that Ebony Maw was a godlike alien and how many of Thanos’ army were mindless drones, it’s understandable that Peter would not have as much of a qualm about killing them as he would other humans. So far in the MCU, Peter’s subscription to a no-killing room has been wonky, with him telling his AI program he didn’t want to kill people, yet he was arguably the cause of Mysterio’s death at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

If Peter is more willing to kill enemies in the MCU, then Mjølnir may find him worthy, unlike his comic book counterpart. There is also the option of another version of Mjølnir appearing without the worthiness enchantment. One alternate comic version of Thor named Thorr had his own Mjølnir with its own enchantment. In his world, Thorr was a violent killer who demanded humans worship him, not really being the “worthy” type. To reflect that, his Mjølnir read that only those who were unworthy could wield it, opening up the hammer for basically anyone else to use. If Spider-Man does dive into multiversal shenanigans, there’s a chance he could encounter this version of Mjølnir and use its backward enchantment to his advantage.

There’s also Thor’s current weapon of choice, Stormbreaker, which does not carry the worthiness enchantment of its predecessor. Steve Rogers wielded the weapon briefly during the final battle against Thanos, proving someone with super strength was fully capable of handling the weapon. If Spider-Man and Thor team up over the course of Phase Four, the web-head may have his chance to wield a powerful Asgardian weapon.

If Mjølnir returns in Phase Four with its worthiness enchantment, there’s always a chance that a hero besides Spider-Man will rise up and wield the hammer. Sam Wilson proved himself worthy of the mantle of Captain America, so he may follow in Steve’s footsteps by using Thor’s weapon in battle. Vision has proven himself worthy of carrying Mjølnir before, meaning the synthezoid could do so again in Phase Four. Whoever wields the hammer, it’s clear that Mjølnir’s days of beating up bad guys may not be over just yet.
