New Mutants teases that one of Krakoa’s most potentially dangerous allies is starting to betray the mutant nation and could threaten the whole galaxy.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for New Mutants #21, now on sale from Marvel Comics.
The X-Men and their allies on Krakoa have effectively set themselves up as the future of the Marvel Universe, with numerous powerful allies and resources at their disposal. But now, one of their most potentially deadly deterrents might be getting out of control.
In New Mutants #21 (by Vita Ayala, Rod Reis, VC’s Travis Lanham & Joe Caramagna), Warpath learns that Broo has been having trouble controlling and containing the Brood Hive — and there’s no version of that possibility that works well for any other species in the galaxy.
The Brood are among the most dangerous alien races within the Marvel Universe. A deadly and ruthless species that prey upon others and assimilates them into their hive, the Brood have often been held up as genuine galactic threats. They’ve killed countless beings over the years, and have come into conflict with numerous different universal kingdoms and planets — including coming up against Earth’s heroes (most notably the X-Men). In the current era of universal alliance brought on by the advent of the Kree-Skrull Alliance, having a wild card like the Brood on the board could offer the kind of chaotic threat that could escalate conflict or wars across the cosmos.
Luckily, the Brood have been relatively tame as of late. Ancient Kree scientists had sought to control the Brood, creating the Brood King egg — which could grant control of the entire universal spanning hive to a single being. X-Men #9 by Jonathan Hickman and Leinil Francis Yu focused on the X-Men and their allies in the Shi’Ar Imperial Guard trying to find a way to keep the Brood armies from claiming the egg and spreading more pain and death across the universe. But that’s when Broo — a brilliant inventor and soft-hearted former student of the Jean Grey Institute — instead consumed the egg himself. As a Brood, this allowed Broo to effectively take control of the Hive Mind, giving Krakoa one of their most potentially powerful allies.
However, things haven’t been quite as smooth as Broo and the others would likely have hoped for. While on the moon with his students in New Mutants #21, the former X-Force member finds himself confronting a small contingent of Brood warriors. Despite his initial expectation that they’ll be under Broo’s control, the aliens quickly attack him and try to murder him. His students provide assistance — and the threat to their lives enrages Warpath enough to wipe out the remaining Brood warriors with his bare hands. Broo then arrives on the scene, revealing that recently two groups of warrior class Brood had been rebelling against him — including the one they just wiped out. Broo had actually been on his way to tell Warpath — who is furious regardless of the explanation.
It’s not surprising to see Warpath mad over the situation, and understandable why he tells off Broo — admitting he still chooses to trust him but will be informing the Quiet Council of this slip-up while demanding Broo send the Brood hordes deeper into space and away from Earth. There’s no good version of these events, as both likely options are worrisome. If Broo is losing control of the Brood Hive, then one of Marvel’s deadliest species might be free to bring havoc to the galaxy. But if Broo is still in control but allowing warriors to attack others, then it could suggest Broo is losing control of himself — which could turn one of the X-Men’s quietly most useful allies into a threat that could bring down entire empires if deployed correctly.
