One of the biggest anime series of this generation is Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, an exciting shonen action series that’s practically become emblematic of the genre. Dragon Ball has done an excellent job over the years, continually showcasing incredible battles and transformations. Yet, it still finds ways to update its formula with changing modern storytelling sensibilities.
One of the most entertaining aspects of Dragon Ball is that it features an exaggerated version of Earth that’s subject to many unusual quirks that give it character. Dragon Ball is entertaining to watch, but the life that it teases would also be a lot of fun to actually to experience.
10 Wishes On The Dragon Balls
There’s a whole lot that goes down in Dragon Ball, but if nothing else, the titular orbs that are the series’ namesake are a pretty important perk. The Dragon Balls are legendary treasures that are scattered across the Earth, and whoever is able to acquire them can make a wish for practically anything. The fact that Dragon Ball takes place where wishes can be granted is quite the big deal, especially when these wishes can grant extravagant requests like bringing people back to life.
9 Dinosaurs And Supernatural Creatures Can Be Pets
Another distinct detail about Dragon Ball’s universe is that it exists in its own timeline that’s slightly different from reality in some big ways, like how dinosaurs don’t seem to be fully extinct and can be encountered in the wild. Not only do dinosaurs exist, but there are many other unusual supernatural creatures, whether they’re dragons, anthropomorphic animals, or shapeshifting entities like Oolong and Puar. This doesn’t apply to every creature, but many of these animals are docile and capable of domestication. It allows for some very creative pets, and Gohan even briefly has a dragon as his friend.
8 The Advanced Technology Of The Capsule Corporation
The level of technology in the Dragon Ball universe is all over the place, but a major advent of their universe is the Briefs family making major headway through their Capsule Corporation. Capsule Corp. has perfected a staggering form of technology where equipment, transportation, or even a home can be stored and released with tiny capsules.
The possibilities of these capsules are explored in the original Dragon Ball series, but they essentially allow for a high level of convenience and luxury that reality is nowhere near achieving.
7 The Regular Entertainment Of The World Martial Arts Tournament
International sporting events and competitions are prevalent in the real world, and one event that Dragon Ball capitalizes on is the World Martial Arts Tournament, a fancy competition that’s held once every five years. In the series, this tournament is typically an opportunity for characters to prove who is the strongest, but it’s also something that draws in a major crowd. It’s very interesting to consider the competition from a spectator’s perspective and how thrilling the matches would be to witness.
6 There’s A Street-Level Superhero Who Protects The Streets
Dragon Ball has basic police to keep the public safe, just like in the real world, and there are of course characters like Goku who operate behind the scenes and protect the planet from elimination, even if the public is oblivious to these matters. However, Gohan’s high school years see him donning a superhero alter ego, the Great Saiyaman, who isn’t shy when it comes to his duties. The Great Saiyaman does come across as a bit of a joke, but civilians would feel a little extra safe knowing that Saiyaman is out there for them.
5 The Ability To Travel Through Space And Visit Other Planets
The original Dragon Ball is an entirely terrestrial anime series and it’s not until Dragon Ball Z that the characters first leave the Earth’s atmosphere and visit Planet Namek. This kicks off a trend of the characters taking a lot of their business to other planets, and sometimes, even different universes.
Space travel doesn’t seem to be something that’s readily available to the public, but it’s at least something that’s possible, and that there are many friendly planets out there with their own perks to experience.
4 Humans Can Learn How To Fly With Enough Training
Dragon Ball begins in a place where actual martial arts skills are paramount, but it gradually progresses to a point where staggering energy attacks and unbelievable transformations become the key to success. The majority of the public in Dragon Ball’s universe aren’t going to master their ki and learn how to trade energy waves, but the series shows that certain abilities, like flight, aren’t outside the basic human’s grasp. Basic ki maneuvers and manipulation are things that people could appreciate, even if they’re not at a point where they’re destroying mountains with their life force.
3 Time Travel Is A Possibility
Like in most forms of science fiction that handle time travel, there are serious consequences in Dragon Ball for messing around with the fabric of space and time. Accordingly, time travel is not something that should be abused and most civilians will live their lives having no idea that it’s even possible. However, Dragon Ball does develop a science that unpacks the principles of time travel and treats it as a very real solution to some problems. Time travel may ultimately be more trouble than it’s worth, but knowing that it exists as an option is a definite perk.
2 Communication With The Afterlife Is Prevalent
Death is a very prevalent force in Dragon Ball and there is an exaggerated number of threats that can prematurely end people’s lives. Death isn’t any less devastating in Dragon Ball, but the series does establish a robust afterlife that proves that life doesn’t truly end upon death. It’s comforting to know that there’s a whole universe and infrastructure that exists in Other World, but there are also occasions where those on Earth can communicate with the dead. Fortuneteller Baba’s tournament as well as speaking through holy figures like King Kai prove that this is possible.
1 The Wide Variety Of Transportation That Is Available
Most of Dragon Ball’s characters turn to flight as their primary means of transportation, but Dragon Ball also has a wide range of vehicles that regular individuals can appreciate. Capsule Corp technology contains tons of effective transportation like air-bikes and spreaders, but there are also different varieties of mech suits that are out there in the world. Robotics in general are a lot further along and transportation has advanced a lot as a result. There are even options like the Flying Nimbus out there for those who are pure of heart.
