If you enjoy party games on your Nintendo Switch, there’s a new one coming to the system later this year which puts a comical spin on a genre that’s not typically known for its lighthearted laughs. If you like games like Overcooked but find them lacking when it comes to Tommy guns and mythical gods wreaking havoc and horror, Astrolabe Interactive’s Sacrifice Your Friends might be just the thing you’re looking for.
Combining Lovecraftian horror and cartoon stylings, Sacrifice Your Friends is described as a 1-4 player ‘party brawler’ which originated on Kickstarter before being picked up by RedDeerGames for Xbox and Switch (the game is already available on Steam Early Access, too).
If you’re having trouble picturing this Lovecraft X Chibi mashup, check out the announcement trailer above and you’ll soon be up to speed. RedDeer says that the game will include Lovecraft locations such as The Mountain of Madness and the Nameless City, plus local and online modes and a single-player mode where you can explore the world without other people bothering you. Cross-platform play is also included, so you’ll be able to play with all your PC and Xbox pals, too.
Here are a few of the key features as listed in the PR blurb, plus some screenshots to peruse:
Lovecraftian. Discover the mythos of legendary author H.P. Lovevcraft.
Arena mode. Have at it with your friends in exciting arenas for 2 to 4 players.
Sheer madness. Embrace madness and unleash devastating powers by transforming into the mighty avatar of a Great Old One.
Locations. 16 unique dangerous arenas inspired by Lovecraft’s work.
Fun for everyone. With simple controls and goals, everyone can join in. We know: we had our mothers test it out.
“Chasing friends with an enormous axe in their hands, killer tentacles, or the odd fish-folks mob of Innsmouth…” Why not, indeed? The game’s coming ‘later this year’, so if you’ve had enough self-serious takes on ol’ H.P.’s oeuvre over the past few years, this might be worth keeping one or two of your shoggoth eyes on.
Let us know below if you’re down to party with some lighthearted Lovecraft — if that isn’t the world’s biggest oxymoron.
