One Hellfire Gala Death Could Break the Mutant Resurrection Cycle

[ad_1]

During the Hellfire Gala in Wolverine, one unexpected death just opened up a world of new problems for the X-Men and Krakoa’s future.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wolverine #13, by Benjamin Percy, Scot Eaton, Oren Junior, Matthew Wilson and VC’s Cory Petit, on sale now.

The Hellfire Gala has been a tumultuous event, providing several shocking moments and changes to the status quo for the X-Men and Marvel’s other mutants. During this monumental event, the X-Men have wielded their influence and powers in ways that they rarely have before, pushing the boundaries of the mutant nation Krakoa to cosmic new heights.

But in Wolverine #13, the Hellfire Gala took a lethal turn for  Christian Frost, the White Bishop of the Hellfire Trading Company and Emma Frost’s brother. As the White Bishop, Christian has done much to aid the Hellfire Trading Company, the Marauders and Krakoa in general. Since Christian is a mutant, his death itself can easily be undone, thanks to the resurrection protocols. However, the circumstances of his death could cause some major problems for Marvel’s Mutants down the line.

Over the course of the Hellfire Gala, Christian has been tasked with transporting a shipment of Shi’ar Logic Diamonds to Krakoa’s cradles by way of the Marauder. These cradles are vital for storing data on mutants so they can be resurrected. Furthermore, the Shi’ar Logic Diamonds are a crucial part of the resurrection protocols, thanks to their unlimited storage space for mutant data.

Christian was killed while transporting these diamonds. Immediately afterwards, the mysterious killer stole the Marauder and the diamonds along with it. Later on, the Marauder was found burning off the shores of Madripoor. This event could prove very problematic for the mutants of Krakoa. It’s very likely that Christian’s murderer took off with the Shi’ar Logic Diamonds, stealing a valuable resource.

While the loss of such sensitive material might be moderately embarrassing for Krakoa, the Shi’ar remain some of mutants’ closest allies, and replacing them likely wouldn’t ultimately be that much of an issue. Still, the slightest strain in Krakoa’s cosmic relationships could be enough to throw their more recent cosmic plans into turmoil.

If the X-Men don’t reacquire the Shi’ar Logic Diamonds, problems could arise for the resurrection protocols. Mutant resurrection is facilitated, in part, by the Shi’ar Logic Diamonds, so without them, death could become a serious problem for mutantkind once more. The diamonds play a critical role in creating multiple sets of redundant back-ups of the world’s mutant minds, and any lack could put an exploit into the mutant resurrection protocols.

Taken together, all of these factors, plus the torching of the Marauder, could even be some of the first sparks of the Inferno event, which promises to tear the X-Men’s world apart later this year.  While it’s not clear if Krakoa needs a continuous supply of more diamonds, it still seems like Krakoa treated this shipment as precious cargo. Although these are essential to the larger mutant resurrection process, the likely loss of this lone shipment isn’t fatal. However, it could be a dark tiding of the X-Men’s increasingly uncertain future.
