A clip promoting the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings shows the mystical creatures that audiences believed were from Pokémon.
A promotional spot for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings provides a glimpse of the creatures that certain audiences mistook for Pokémon characters.
The 45-second spot was cut for the opening day of the superhero movie, condensing moments from the 132-minute feature into a rapidly-paced clip. Near the video’s midpoint appears a small band of huli jing, multi-tailed vulpine inhabitants of Ta Lo who possess mystical powers and sport vibrant, pale coats. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was surprised to learn that initial audience reactions to the film included confusion over how the creatures came to be part of the story.
“The only thing that’s surprised me in early reactions, and I don’t know if this has been online, but it was in some of the early screenings, a lot of the reference points… Some people think there are a couple of Pokémon characters in there, they’re not Pokémon characters, but they are inspired by similar things, I guess, which took me by surprise,” said Feige.
The huli jing trace their roots to millennia-old Chinese mythology, a rich tapestry that includes the nine-tailed foxes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The same lore inspired Ninetales, a Pokémon bearing a strong resemblance to the MCU’s creations, a coincidence that points to the likely cause of audience confusion.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now out in theaters.
