Metroid: All Of Samus’ Power Suits, Ranked By Aesthetic

[ad_1]

With Metroid Dread just around a corner, here’s a look back at all of Samus’ suits. All of them are cool, but some are undeniably cooler than others.

Although she isn’t a poster child of Nintendo like Mario, Samus is one of Nintendo’s most iconic characters. Perhaps even more iconic than Samus herself are the power suits that she wears, with her Varia Suit and Zero Suit being some of her most recognizable ones. However, those aren’t the only suits she wears.

With every new entry in the Metroid series, fans know to expect a new power suit with new abilities for Samus to use. While the functionality of each power suit differs, some of them are more aesthetically pleasing than others.

10 The Fusion Suit Is Not Bad, Just Not Great

The Fusion Suit is the suit Samus wore during the events of Metroid Fusion. The suit itself was a side effect of her original power suit being infected by the X Parasites. The bonding of her suit with the Metroid vaccine resulted in the Fusion Suit, saving Samus’ life. It’s not that the Fusion Suit is bad by any means. It’s just not among the best-looking or iconic suits Samus wears. Bright yellow and light blue simply isn’t the best color combination for a power suit.

9 The Base Power Suit Is A Little Plain

In almost every game, the Power Suit is Samus’ basic suit without upgrades that she starts with. The suit and color scheme are instantly recognizable, though it is not as cool looking as Samus’ other suits, nor is it as nostalgic as her fully-upgraded suit. The Power Suit is less bulky than many of Samus’ other suits. This makes it look less intimidating and overall a little plain compared to her suits with upgraded functionality.

8 The Upgraded Fusion Suit Is A Step In The Right Direction

When Samus’ Fusion Suit is fully upgraded in Metroid Fusion, the suit takes on a new form and color scheme that more closely resembles her original Power Suit. This suit is not named in the game or any official source. However, fans have dubbed the upgraded Fusion Suit the Omega Suit due to its use against the challenging Omega Metroid final boss. The classic power suit colors fit the Fusion Suit more than its original yellow and blue. In addition, the details inspired by Metroid larvae, like the three nuclei on the suit’s back and spikes on the arms, complement it better in this form.

7 The Varia Suit Is Iconic And Nostalgic

The Varia Suit is probably Samus’ most iconic suit and is what she wears in most of her appearances. The Varia Suit represents her Power Suit in its (almost) fully upgraded state, adding round shoulder pauldrons and more armor on her legs. As such, the suit is bulkier and reflective of the greater protection for Samus it provides.

Later entries in the series have added additional details, such as green lights on the Varia Suit, setting it apart from the base Power Suit even more with a more high-tech appearance.

6 The Gravity Suit Adds Some Extra Flair

The Gravity Suit is very similar in appearance to the Varia Suit with its large shoulder pauldrons and additional armor on the legs. The dark purple added to Samus’ traditional Power Suit colors works surprisingly well compared to the light blue of the Fusion Suit. The suit also typically changes the color of the lights on Samus’ visor and suit to blue instead of the traditional green. Metroid Dread looks set to change the Gravity Suit’s design to match Samus’ new suit in that game, setting it apart from the Varia Suit even more.

5 The PED Suit Is One Of Samus’ Best Upgrades

The Phazon Enhancement Device Power Suit from Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is one of the most interesting suits Samus wears in the series. The PED Suit combines the Chozo technology of Samus’ original suit with the same technology that the Galactic Federation soldiers use. In addition, it harnesses the corrupting Phazon as a useful weapon. Adding the Hazard Shield and utilizing higher levels of corruption causes the PED Suit to look even more unique, with darker colors and blue light accents running across it.

4 The Power Suit In Metroid Dread Is A Good Mix Of Old And New

Fans have been looking forward to a new 2D Metroid entry for a long time, and they are understandably excited about the upcoming release of Metroid Dread. Samus is set to wear a new version of her suit again, said to be the result of her original suit regenerating itself from the Fusion Suit. Fans will have to wait until release to find out if there is any more to it than that.

Unlike the Fusion Suit, the Power Suit from Dread feels like a more natural progression, in keeping with classic design aesthetics. The suit and helmet are more streamlined and futuristic, the blue and white compliments the suit well, and the boots are a nod to her Zero Suit.

3 The Dark Suit Is One Of Samus’ Coolest Suits

The Dark Suit is one of Samus’ most distinctive suits she acquires in the Metroid Prime Trilogy. The suit allowed Samus to traverse the transdimensional Dark Aether safely. The dark colors and red lights already make the suit a standout compared to other suits Samus has worn. The changes to the armor design, such as the disc-like shoulders, work surprisingly well. Because of the disc shape, the suit looks extra cool in Morph Ball form.

2 The Light Suit Is The Most Unique Suit Samus Wears

The Light Suit is undoubtedly the single most unique suit Samus has worn in the series so far. The Light Suit was created by the Luminoth race, combining their technology with the Chozo technology of the Varia Suit. Ability-wise, the suit is superior to the Dark Suit and completely protects Samus from the atmosphere of Dark Aether. In appearance, the suit is much more alien than anything Samus has worn before. The pearly-white suit is sleek and smooth, giving Samus an alien yet angelic appearance.

1 The Phazon Suit Is The Best Suit Samus Has Worn So Far

Metroid Prime Samus Phazon Suit

The Phazon Suit is the greatest suit Samus has worn so far in terms of both ability and appearance. The suit offered Samus the greatest amount of protection in Metroid Prime and allowed her to use the incredibly powerful Phazon Beam. Regardless of abilities, the suit just looks cool. The Phazon Suit is darker and glossier than the Dark Suit, with shiny chrome on the helmet and torso areas. With the darker armor comes brighter crimson lights on the suit and visor. Finally, the arm cannon utilizes Phazon, giving it an ethereal blue glow. All this makes for the best-looking suit Samus has worn so far.
