Spider-Man Just Found a Glimmer of Hope in Marvel’s Dark Ages

[ad_1]

Marvel’s Dark Ages has introduced a world of never-ending night but Peter Parker has uncovered a shocking beacon of hope shining through the darkness.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Dark Ages #1, available now from Marvel.

Marvel’s Dark Ages has introduced Marvel’s most devastating timeline yet. And as in so many other groundbreaking worlds, Spider-Man was right there at the start of it. However, Peter Parker proved to be utterly helpless in the face of the latest threat to befall his world. In fact, there wasn’t much else he could do besides watch as the world he knew fell to darkness entirely. Even in the worst moments, Spider-Man just found a silver lining in the superheroic debut of his daughter, May Parker.

The world of Dark Ages started out in a world not unlike the primary Marvel Universe. In this reality, Peter and Mary Jane have a rambunctious, superpowered toddler on their hands in the form of their daughter May. As she uses her young powers to crawl up the walls. her Spider-Sense goes absolutely haywire for mysterious reasons, as does her father’s. As the events of Dark Ages #1 by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber and VC’s Joe Sabino unfold, an ancient living machine known as the Unmaker is unveiled as the cause of the global disturbances.

Asthe massive Unmaker attempts to tear its way free from the core of the planet itself, all that Spider-Man can do is swing back to his family as fast as possible. However, the fall of the Unmaker comes with the end of all things electrical, including the switches in Peter’s web-shooters. When the lights go out, Peter is left to run as fast as he can towards the wreckage of his home.

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are unsurprisingly unscathed when he arrives, but Mary Jane and May are nowhere to be seen. The trio sifts through the rubble as quickly as they can before Peter is greeted with a sight that is heartbreaking in its wholesomeness.  Despite her diminutive stature, May beams with joy upon seeing her father, seemingly oblivious to the thousands of pounds of concrete and steel that she is holding high above her head with ease, saving Mary Jane and a few others. It’s shocking to see such a small child achieving such an amazing feat, but May isn’t the first Parker daughter to exhibit impressive powers.

For over a decade, May “Mayday” Parker stole the spotlight as Spider-Girl following her first appearance in 1998’s What If? #105 in the story “Legacy… In Black and White” by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. This first appearance was so well received that Mayday starred in her own series for over a hundred issues and appeared in a slew of other titles following Spider-Girl‘s conclusion.

From the looks of things in Dark Ages, the May Parker of this reality is already well on her way to being the same kind of hero as her more iconic predecessor.  The darkness might be here to stay, but that doesn’t mean that all of the lights in the world have gone out, and May is already a beacon of hope for every single day left to come.
