The Last Annihilation Will Drag an Old Mutant Into New Cosmic Territory

While a young Cable might be on Krakoa right now, an older Cable has a big role in Marvel’s upcoming Last Annihilation crossover event.

The recently solicited cover for the upcoming Cable Reloaded #1 By Al Ewing and Bob Quinn, a tie-in to the upcoming Last Annihilation event confirmed that the classic adult version of Cable will be returning to the Marvel Universe and apparently wielding a crucial Marvel weapon.

Since Cable debuted in Rob Liefeld and Louise Simonson’s New Mutants #87, he’s forged the New Mutants into X-Force and fought countless battles for mutantkind. But now, his latest fight will take him somewhere where he’s never gone before.

Nathan Summers first appeared as a baby in Chris Claremont, Rick Leonardi and Whilce Portacio’s 1986 Uncanny X-Men #201. He is the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey created by Mr. Sinister. He was raised by Cyclops and Jean until he was kidnapped by goons working for Apocalypse in Chris Claremont, Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio’s 1991 X-Factor #68. Apocalypse’s henchmen infected him with a techno-organic virus. Luckily, a woman from 2,000 years in the future named Sister Askani traveled back in time to save the young mutant. She took him back into her future — a dystopian world ruled by Apocalypse and his soldiers, which Cable grew up. Eventually, the adult Cable traveled to the modern Marvel Universe, where he has become one of Marvel’s most capable leaders and battle tacticians.

Cable’s heroic career came to an end in 2018’s Extermination #1 by Ed Brisson and Pepe Larraz, when a younger version of himself killed him to protect the timeline and recover several members of the X-Men who were displaced in time. Kid Cable went on to become an important member of the X-Men and star in his own 2020 series by Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto. As he tries to live up to the reputation of his older self, the series also features glimpses of a mysterious older Nathan Summers making his way through some sort of dystopian reality. It is hard to tell whether or not this new old Cable is from another timeline or if he is just an older version of Kid Cable, but Duggan and Noto’s recent Cable #10 hints that both Cables have the same sword.

When his long-time nemesis Stryfe becomes active again, Cable wants to resurrect his old self and return to the future he originally hails from. But, his father believes that he can do more good staying in Krakoa in the present. Cyclops goes so far as to say that the original Cable has served his purpose and that the future of Nathan Summers lies with the young Nathan. Cyclops’s attachment to the young version of Nathan is understandable, considering that this is the first time he’s been able to spend time with his son as a teenager in the present-day Marvel Universe. The return of the older version of the hero will surely recontextualize his relationship with his time-traveling child, and may even result in Kid Cable returning to his dystopian future.

Despite Cyclops’ reservations, the return of the classic Cable may prove to be a positive event for both versions of his son. Young Cable is clearly struggling with guilt surrounding the murder of his older self and seems to be in need of some guidance and assistance in his battle against Stryfe. The return of an older Cable could bring him some closure in addition to some pragmatic help, and both versions of the character may end up playing vital roles in the Last Annihilation event.
