Val Kilmer’s son Jack says Top Gun: Maverick will feature real pilots, who decided to start flying after watching the original movie, as extras.
Val Kilmer’s son Jack revealed that filmmakers cast real pilots, who were inspired by the original Top Gun movie, as extras in Top Gun: Maverick.
The younger Kilmer and his sister Mercedes, who joined their dad on the film’s San Diego set during filming, told People that they witnessed “hundreds of extras of real pilots” who cited the 1986 movie as the reason they decided to enter their respective fields.
“They were coming up to us and telling us that the first Top Gun inspired them to join the Navy and the Air Force,” Jack said. “Then we had these big F-bomb planes flying overhead. It was like one of the proudest moments of being American that you could think of really.”
While Val Kilmer portrayed Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky opposite Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the original Top Gun, the actor revealed in his 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, that he wasn’t originally supposed to reprise the role in the Top Gun sequel. However, he wrote, “It didn’t matter that the producers didn’t contact me. As the Temptations sang in the heyday of Motown soul, ‘ain’t too proud to beg.'”
The sequel will also pay homage to Anthony Edwards’ character, Lt. JG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, who tragically died in the first film and left behind both his wife and young son. Miles Teller will portray Goose’s now grown-up son and is expected to take his father’s place as Maverick’s newest wingman and protege.
The original Top Gun movie celebrated its 35th anniversary back on May 13, aka Top Gun Day, by returning to 150 AMC Theaters for 24 hours. The Tony Scott-directed film was also re-released in the Digital, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray formats for home viewing. Those versions also included more than four hours of extras, including new interviews with Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer about Top Gun: Maverick.
In addition to returning as Maverick, Cruise is set to appear in Mission: Impossible 7, which is scheduled for release in 2022. While Cruise has made a career out of performing extreme stunts, he recently admitted that his most death-defying stunt yet will appear in the new M:I film. The stunt allegedly involves the actor driving a motorcycle off a cliff in Norway, letting go of the bike in midair and freefalling before deploying his parachute.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, from a screenplay by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Manny Jacinto, and more. The film is set for release on Nov. 19, 2021.
