In Black Widow #10, Natasha’s team gets help from a future MCU star, hinting at a possible team-up that may occur in the cinematic universe.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Black Widow #10, available now from Marvel Comics.
Natasha Romanoff has recently come through the most tragic moment in her life, but the Avenger is already back in action in Black Widow #10, by Kelly Thompson, Elena Casagrande, Rafael De LaTorre, Elisabetta D’Amico, Jordie Bellaire, and VC’s Cory Petit.
However, Natasha is not alone in her latest mission, and two of her teammates bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ascendant superstars together by teaming up Yelena Belova and Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye.
The villain Apogree has been handing out superpowers that burn out the bodies of his cult-like followers, and the Widows have been trying to stop him and save his followers before it’s too late. Former Apogee scientist Craig and the electricity-empowered Lucy have been working on an antidote to Apogee’s serum, while the Widows and Spider-Girl confront the crazed villain and his cult of followers, the Olio. Despite how skilled Natasha and her team are, they don’t stand much of a chance against a room full of superpowered maniacs. Thankfully, reinforcement shows up just in time in the form of Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye.
Kate and her arrows even the odds, and Yelena silently admits that she loves having a Hawkeye around. Kate meshes seamlessly with the team here, helping them take down the Olio. While this may just seem like a standard Marvel superhero team-up, it also brings together two characters who are about to crash into each other in the MCU.
As established at the end of Black Widow, Florence Pugh’s Yelena is poised to take over the role of the Black Widow from Natasha in the MCU, and one of her first missions will be to hunt down Jeremey Renner’s Hawkeye, who she believes to have hand in Natasha’s death in Avengers: Endgame. In all likelihood, that confrontation will happen in the upcoming Disney+ series Hawkeye, where Hailee Steinfeld is set to portray Kate Bishop. And in all likelihood, these two characters will have a far more contentious relationship than they do here.
While Black Widow and Hawkeye were one of the MCU’s most iconic duos, the inheritors to their legacies almost certainly won’t get off on the right foot. However, it’s likely only a matter of time until Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye and Yelena’s Black Widow find themselves working together as they did in this comic.
