Warner Bros. is promoting the release of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad in Japan with a new poster drawn by BEASTARS creator Paru Itagaki.
Warner Bros. has teamed up with manga artist Paru Itagaki to promote The Suicide Squad‘s release in Japan.
The new illustration was revealed by Comics Natalie and features Harley Quinn and the lovable King Shark drawn in Itagaki’s trademark style. The illustration was released to help promote Suicide Squad, which opened in Japan on Aug. 13. So far, James Gunn’s critically acclaimed sequel has made 390 million yen in the region, which is much less than the over one billion yen David Ayer’s Suicide Squad made during its theatrical run in the country in 2016. It is worth noting that the sequel was released in the middle of Japan’s latest pandemic related lock down, which has seen the country experience a substantial spike in COVID-19 cases in its most densely populated areas.
Paru Itagaki is the daughter of Baki creator Keisuke Itagaki, and is well known in her own right for the smash-hit BEASTARS manga series. Itagaki’s manga about a society made up of anthropomorphic animals was originally published from 2016-2020 and was the recipient of numerous critics’ choice and publishing industry awards in Japan. The English localization was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2020. The manga was adapted into an anime series by Netflix and CG animation studio Orange, which is also known for its work on Land of the Lustrous and Godzilla Singular Point. The show has become one of Netflix’s most successful original anime productions, and following the release of the second season last July, Netflix confirmed that the anime would continue with a third season.
BEASTARS concluded its serialization in October 2020. Itagaki recently began publishing a new series, Sanda, which features human characters dealing with a world in which the birthright has drastically declined, leading to a population that is mostly made up of seniors.
The Suicide Squad is the standalone sequel to the 2016 movie that was originally directed by David Ayer. Based on the DC Comics series of the same name, the movie tells the story of a squad of supervillains who are drafted by the U.S. government to execute dangerous secret missions in exchange for reduced prison sentences. The new movie was directed by Guardians of the Galaxy‘s James Gunn and stars Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, John Cena, and Joel Kinnaman. The movie was released on Aug. 5 in the United States in both theaters and on streaming through HBO Max. Despite an overwhelmingly positive reception from fans and critics alike, the movie has underperformed commercially, with industry analysts blaming its tepid box-office revenue on the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the simultaneous streaming release and audience confusion over whether it was a sequel or a reboot of the 2016 film.
This is not the first time a movie studio has collaborated with a manga author in order to help promote a superhero movie or show in Japan. In June, Marvel teamed with Bleach creator Tite Kubo to advertise the release of the Loki series in the country.
