When Does Critical Role Campaign 3 Start?

[ad_1]

Critical Role’s main cast has been on hiatus since early June, but fans anxiously await an official announcement on the launch for campaign three.

The main cast of Critical Role has been on hiatus since the end of campaign two in early June, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been busy growing the show’s brand while preparing for the launch of their third campaign. Set in the iconic world of Exandria created by Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer, campaign three promises to be another exciting adventure with a bunch of “nerdy ass voice actors” who gather regularly around the table to play Dungeons & Dragons on Thursday nights on Twitch.

Critical Role partially filled the void between campaigns with an all new, original campaign called Exandria Unlimited. Set in Mercer’s world and run by Aabria Iyengar, the limited-run series featured Mercer as a player, alongside series’ regulars Liam O’Brien and Ashley Johnson and new players Robbie Daymond and Aimee Carrero. Now that Exandria Unlimited is complete, Critters can’t help but wonder when they can expect campaign three.

Critical Role Campaigns One & Two

Critical Role began streaming mid-campaign one on Geek & Sundry back in March 2015, introducing viewers to a group of adventurers calling themselves Vox Machina. Their setup wasn’t nearly as professional as it is these days, but the content of the adventure, including the portrayal of the game’s characters and Mercer’s world, quickly picked up a following that only continued to grow with each episode.

Vox Machina’s campaign went on for 115 episodes. They managed to outsmart and destroy a conclave of chromatic dragons led by Thordak, the Cinder King, in the “Chroma Conclave” story arc. The campaign’s final arc pitted the party against the power hungry Vecna, whom they managed to banish — but not before guest player Joe Manganiello claimed the Hand of Vecna for himself. Wrapping things up in October 2017, they went to produce three campaign-specific one-shots over the next year. A crowd-funded animated series based on the Legend of Vox Machina is currently in production and will air on Amazon Prime when it releases.

Giving themselves time to prepare between campaigns, it wasn’t until January 2018 that campaign two launched into the adventures of a seemingly mismatched band of misfits who eventually came to call themselves The Mighty Nein. Set in Wildemount, a previously unexplored region of Exandria, the Mighty Nein found themselves quickly embroiled in a political war between the Empire and the Krynn Dynasty.

After Mollymauk Tealeaf, Taliesin Jaffe’s original player character, was killed in battle against a band of vicious slavers who abducted three of the other party members, Mercer mined Molly’s complicated backstory brilliantly, tying it into an endgame story arc that led the Mighty Nein to an epic battle against the Somnovem in a living city called Cognouza that had been removed from Aeor during the Great Calamity and transported to the Astral Sea. Campaign two wrapped in June 2021, but fans still know next to nothing about what they can expect from campaign three.

When Will Campaign Three Start?

There has been no official announcement to date about when fans can expect campaign three to begin or where in Tal’Dorei it might be set. However, Critical Role recently announced in its scheduling updates for August and September that an announcement about the third campaign would be made sometime in early October. The crew is currently in the process of building a brand new set for the campaign, and both players and DM are taking their time to creatively prepare for new characters and settings.

Currently, fans are speculating that campaign three will begin airing not long after the announcement. Considering how much time and effort the Critical Role cast puts into their Halloween episode costumes each year, fans can only hope that tradition will stand, meaning the campaign would have to launch before the end of October. Until an official announcement is made though, Critters will have to standby and tide themselves over with the upcoming Ashley Johnson one-shot and new episodes of Mighty Vibes and Narrative Telephone.
